Erlic watched the reactions on his comrades as he related the news about the finding of Alakbar. He didn’t know how many of them would take it, but what had happened, happened, and they would have to make the best of the issue for now.

He was relieved to see that some of the group intended on making the best of the evening by continuing in their game. For now that was probably the best, considering once morning came, they would have other matters to worry about, not to mention the safety of the Padisha’s son, as well as their own.

The assassin was quite surprised to feel a hand on his arm, Isobel’s hand, and she immediately pulled him aside. He listened to the newest member of the group as she relayed her concern about traces of magic that resided within the youth. She demonstrated her concern by displaying her arm, which now registered a multitude of goose bumps, and considering the climate at the moment was quite warm, Erlic could only rely on the woman’s own instincts. Perhaps there was magic within the youth, but if there were, Erlic was not the one that would be able to discern it; after all, he wasn’t a practitioner of the magic arts.

Isobel continued on regarding the safety of the camp, as well as the trustworthiness of the tribe. The assassin gave that notion considerable thought as he pondered the idea in his head. He finally decided that they were still safe, at least until morning. “Regarding your detection of magic,” Erlic began. “I can’t be of much service to you. I’m but a simple thief, and a fighter. Although I’ve heard much about what magic can, and cannot do, I’m not an expert in the field, therefore I can’t really give you a reliable answer.”

Erlic had his own brand of magic that he worked when the situation called for it, and it was called chi. It was an inner power that all humans possessed, but only a few realized its potential. Erlic’s master had instilled this thought to Erlic as a young boy, and as the youth grew to manhood, he learned the various forms of chi, and what it could do, both as an offensive, and defensive weapon.

The assassin looked around the campsite, and finally turned his attention back to Isobel, patting her hand in assurance. “If the tribal people wanted us out of the picture, they could have already done so,” he answered. “Think about it. We’ve been here for a while, have partaken in their drink, and food. It could have been very easy for them to put us out. I think that either they don’t know about the hidden dungeon, or wish to simply not think about it for fear of their own safety.”

Erlic looked to Isobel for any confirmation, or for any emotions that might register on her face. “I think that the only people in real danger will be us, once morning comes. If we all keep our wits about us, we should do fine, regardless of the circumstances. We’ll simply take matters one day at a time, for that’s all we can do for the moment.”

The assassin gave the young woman a smile in hopes that it might comfort her growing concern.
