Subject: Ya wanna know the chant on ol' Barry, eh?
In reply to: Erlic, Corum & Yorik 's message, "Stranger than strange" on 11:58:57 11/25/01 Sun

Barry stared at Erlic (he had to... he had no eyelids although, perversely, he did have eyes). This berk was all about literalism, wasn't he?

"Yeah, yeah. I knew I was on the Prime Meterial Plane, ya berk. I meant... ferget it. So this is Neromba?" He sort of spun in the air looking around as if the entire palace was Neromba. He was being sarcastic. "Pretty small for a continent." Then turned back to Erlic as the elder thief spoke.

“So tell us,” Erlic asked, “What brings you to this place, and above all why?”

"Ehhh... long story, guv, but I'm here now. That's all that matters, right?" He saw that this wasn't going to be an adequate explanation by the look on Erlic's face. "Okay, okay. I woke up down in a grave or somethin'. Floated around 'til I found this joint (nice kip, by the way). Here I am. Ya happy, Cutter?" He obviously wasn't.

Barry caught sight of Yorik just then and floated over to him. He was disappointed to find it wasn't a female skull. He'd seen Corum talking to the skull so he spoke to it. "Hey, buddy. Help me tumble to the dark of this place, will ya? Buddy? Hey!" Yorik didn't appear inclined to answer him.

Suddenly Corum leapt to his feet and Barry shot up out of reach as quickly as he could. The addle-cove had gone barmy!

“Hey wait a minute,” Corum yelled at him, “How come you can talk, and Yorik here can’t? Skulls aren’t supposed to talk you know…..or are they? And anyway, where’s the rest of you at? How come you don’t have a staff for your body?”

From his place up near the ceiling Barry replied, "If Yorik can't talk why in the blazes were you babbling to it a minute ago?" He didn't give Corum a chance to answer before going on, "For your information I'm not a skull. Well, I am. But I'm uh... well bar that! I don't know what I am anymore. But I got this curse, see? From some holy moly who didn't like the way I talked to him. Don't get that myself. The berk was just beggin' for it!" (By now, of course, Barry had no recollection of the real reason he'd been so foully cursed by that cleric, but this was the story he stuck to because it was all he could remember.) "So anyway, he goes and curses me. I gotta keep comin' back again and again. Do I know why? No I do not, Cutter, and I'm pretty piked off about it too. I got no body. Do you know what it's like to have itches you can't scratch? And the dames! Well... nevermind about them. Point is, I can't have a bod. Tried it... got myself attached to one of those skeleton bodies some necromancer guy had on hand, but the thing crumbled to dust. Can't have a bod. Can't rest in peace. So here I am. Damn that cleric!"

He felt the tug in the room. Why couldn't he tell who it was coming from? It was too faint. He would have to bang around here until he figured out who it was, and why. Damn that cleric to the Mazes!
