Subject: How do you handle in-law issues?

I was talking to my aunt and uncle recently and they said that they agreed early on to let each other handle things with their respective parents. So if my uncle is having a hard time with my aunt's parents, he tells her and she deals with them. The reasoning being that they each know their own family dynamic and it keeps their spouse from having to be the bad guy.

What are your thoughts on this? I've never really pulled any punches with my in-laws and my dh always backs me. However, right now my in-laws aren't speaking to me and I'm wondering if we should re-think our methods. My aunt and uncle's way of doing things strikes me as a bit childish - like their tattling on their in-laws to their spouse.
