Yes, this is what I told myself in the beginning. Since the authors themselves said that they were establishing canon, it seemed that that had to be the case. But, upon reading them (House trilogy), there is no denying that not everything fits well into the story. Not everything is consistant.

There is also this: the authors say that they have an outline of Dune 7 and I see no reason not to believe them. What they don't say is that they have extensive notes on which to base the prequels. We have no reason to believe that they have even 10 pages of notes about the times before the first book. Brian Herbert himself has said that his father kept track of much of this stuff in his head.

Even if they do have several hundred pages of such notes, there is no reason why we should take their word on it that their books do not bring in any contradiction as much of the plot lines would still have had to be made up by them. But, what's this: as far as I know, they've never actually given their word on this point.

"Ways change", you say. So, the story itself should evolve over time? Does this mean that the new authors should rewrite the original books to accomodate their changes? If the story is to be different, why not write a new story? Of course, I have nothing against fan fiction. Just don't call it canon.

Oh well; now you will, very understandably, probably want to see some actual examples of how the prequels are inconsistant. Maybe I'll put together another rant later for that; for now, suffice it to say that I care nothing about Leto's first concubine and son, about the Baron's disease or about Jessica's being born from the Baron's raping of Reverand Mother Mohiam, which are the often-discussed "contradictions" but, in actuality, neither contradict, nor are inconsistant, with anything that I can think of.

By the way: "spitting against the wind"? What the f*ck do I care about that?
