it does seem a bit too easy, and not devious enough, for herbert to have machines chasing the honored matres. i think the futars are a good clue.i think marty and daniel are independent face dancers, they don't think much of gholas and they have some kind of power to appear to idaho, or else he has the power to see them. the machines of the butlerian age were highly evolved already and fifteen thousand years of further development would have made them formidable indeed but i think that the enemy is organic, at least partially, and because of the futars, the scattered tleilaxu and ixians have something to do with it.
