Subject: Potty training question.

I've been reading about this on another dc board. I'm surprised at the number of providers who won't potty train a child in their care. How about it? Do you think the provider needs to help out in this area? Or do you think it's completely up to the parents? Personally, I think it takes a level of consistancy that can only be obtained by the provider working with the child during the day and the parents working with the child the rest of the time.

I have no problem with training a child but I usually won't begin potty training until the child in question is at least 2 and preferably older. Once they begin waking up dry and acting uncomfortable in a soiled diaper, the diapers go bye-bye and the regular underwear come out. I do not use pull ups or diapers (except at rest time) once the training process begins. I start the process by taking the child to the bathroom every 1/2 hour to 45 minutes..sure there are a few accidents but eventually the child begins to "get it". They understand the feeling of having to go and in no time at all (about a week) they are on their way to being fully trained. This works like a charm for me. I just finished up with a little guy last week and the total time was about 8 days. By the end of the training time, he was asking me to go.

How does everyone else handle this?

Sue
