>Maybe it's just time to scrap the whole thing and develop >some higher budget, primetime-like shows for daytime. "If >you build it, they will come" LOL!

Well the broadcast networks are in serious trouble
in almost every daypart. ABC primetime is a disaster.
I don't forsee any substantial investment in daytime
since all the networks are struggling for survival,
more so ABC than NBC and CBS.

>Just curious if you know if PC has been losing affiliates. >It was my understanding that Sunset Beach's 1.2 happened >because a lot of affiliates dropped the show before it >ended once they learned of it's cancellation.

I doubt any affiliates moved PC's timeslot in past
few weeks, remember it has been May Sweeps. Usually
affiliates make program changes in either Sept or January.
It could happen other times of the year, but highly ever
any changes in the middle of sweeps. Certainly PC's
unsuccessful sweep performance may lead to being dropped in many cities come Sept.

SUBEs record low can not be totally blamed on affiliates dropping the show. Sure it may have been a factor, maybe a big factor, although the truth is SUBEs record low of 1.2
isn't far off from the 1.4 it sunk to in Nov/Dec 1998.
So by no means was the 1.2 a huge drop, remember SUBE was only getting between 1.5-1.8 in April/May/June 1999
and dropped to 1.3-1.6 after AW canceled and PSSNS launched, it dipped to 1.2 when some affiliates dropped it,
then stayed 1.3 or 1.4 from Sept-Dec, 1.5 for two weeks
in Dec, and 1.8 final week. As you know, NBC made their decision to cancel well before it got 1.2, I even suspect they decided to cancel SUBE back in 1998! Obviously NBC would have loved to see SUBEs ratings improve, but
despite all the spin, they knew they had a dud on
their hands, they also wanted to dump the bastard child: Another World. And by dumping AW first, it allowed
Passions to beat SUBE in the ratings. NBC used SUBE
for PSSNS benefit, because had AW remained on the air,
AW would have beated PSSNS in the ratings. NBC knew
this, and they made damned sure, it worked out to their
advantage.

>I'm really starting to wonder if the Goutman/Sheffer team >was just a flash in the pan.

I don't know what to think about those two. They brought
back greatness only to begin to destroy it again! Maybe
they found a long-lost Doug Marland story bible somewhere, they used that for a while, but now they are using their own stuff! LOL

>I noticed that the NBC soaps are really the only ones to >not lose any ground per se.

Like you said, NBC spins a lot. But ABC and CBS does too!
The ABC press release is hillarious! Although in truth, NBC is doing well considering its competitors current state.
