In response to your message on the Appleby Research Organisation Messageboard, please find below something that may be of help.

During the course of my research into a George Appleby, who I believe lived in the Oxon / Bucks area in the mid 1920's, I have come across a record of a Frederick George Appleby born in 1886 in the registration district of Henley. He married in Abingdon in 1922, and his wife's maiden name was Lovegrove.

If your father was born in 1933, it seems unlikely that his parents would have married as early as 1900 as you state. I think this marriage record in 1922 relates to your grandparents. I have also discovered a second child (presumably your uncle), Walter J. Appleby, who was born in Portsmouth in 1924.

I have also discovered the following family group in the 1891 census for Swyncombe.

George Appleby aged 31
Jane Appleby aged 30
Frederick Appleby aged 5
Esther Appleby aged 3
Emily Appleby aged 1

Both George and Frederick were born in Swyncombe. George is listed as an agricultural labourer.

The record of Frederick (aged 5 in 1891) appears to coincide with the record of Frederick George born in 1886, although the birthplace is Swyncombe and not Hurley.

If you were to order the marriage certificate in 1922, it would prove whether the parents of this Frederick Appleby were indeed Arthur John and Rose Appleby, or George and Jane from the 1891 census record above.

As I said above, I am trying to trace a George Appleby who was living in the Oxon / Bucks area around 1926 to 1928. All I have to go on, is that he was a motor proprietor. Do you know whether your grandfather, or indeed any other relative, was connected to the motor trade?

I hope this information is of use.
Regards.
