- Appleby's from Wylam/Crawcrook to the USA -- Paul Appleby, 20:09:20 02/26/06 Sun (81.6.216.193)
Hi
I have recently found out that two of my relatives left the UK via Liverpool to live in the USA. One was called Edward Appleby(dob 1899)born in Wylam, Northumberland England, who stayed in the US, and the other was Stanley Appleby (no dob) born in Crawcrook, near Newcastle upon Tyne, England, who went on up to Canada. They travelled together.
They went to work in the mines - their relatives were all coal miners.
I have checked the website that has passenger records, but although there are tons of Appleby's, alas none with these names.
My guess is that they travelled between 1919 and 1925.
I understand that Stanley went on to be a teacher (or perhaps his Canadian wife did - we are not sure).
I guess I am hoping that someone who reads this forum knows of relatives from Wylam/Crawcrook in England.
Kind regards
Paul Appleby

- Minnie Appleby Tanner Gilbert(?) -- L. QUirk, 16:04:43 01/05/02 Sat (4.47.91.166)
I am looking for information on Minnie Appleby born July 4, 1870 in Beekman, Dutchess Co., NY. Her parents were William (b: 1841 in Washington, NY)& Mary (Decker b:1846 in Plattekill, NY) Applebey. Minnie had two brothers Franklin (b:1867) and Edward (b:1880) who I have been able to find some information on. Minnie married James Egbert Tanner on June 6, 1888 in Wasaic, NY. They lived in Amenia/Dover Plains, NY and had two boys Allerton and Roy (my great, grandfather) in 1889 and 1891. Minnie and James separated prior to 1900 (I've found the family in the 1900 census minus Minnie) - the boys stayed with James. I believe they divorced and that Minnie remarried - perhaps F.M. Gilbert? I am looking for any information about Minnie after she left her marriage to James - I want to know where she went, when they were divorced, whether she remarried, were there other children and when/where she died (just for starters! :) ) Thanks!

My husband's gggrandparents were Richard PEARSON and ? APPLEBY. Their son, my husband's ggrandfather, was William PEARSON m: Rose ROBINSON. Grandpa's father died (one month to the day before he was born) from influenza and "phthisis" (whatever that is). My sister-in-law has the original, certified copy of his father's death certificate, which lists F.W. APPLEBY (uncle) as the "imformant" with his residence being at 16 Front St. Colliery Row Houghton-le-Spring Co Durham. No other records or papers pertaining to the family in England is known to exist.
Grandpa was brought to the U.S. by his mother when he was 2 yrs. old and all track of his family in England was lost. We have been unable to find out the first name of my husband's gggrandmother. All we have for reference is a handwritten note with the names I've given above and no further information, except that which I've mentioned from the death certificate. Does anybody have an APPLEBY/PEARSON connection in their family's history? Thank you for any assistance you may be able to give me.

- George William APPLEBY and family of Spittlegate, Grantham, Lincolnshire, England -- Judy Evans, 16:59:32 04/24/04 Sat (195.188.152.16)
My great-great-aunt Theresa Jane FOGG (born 1852 in Leicester, England) married George William APPLEBY (born about 1851 in Whitby, Yorkshire, England) on 10th September 1978 in St George, Leicester. They then appear in the 1881 census at 11 Wharf Road, Spittlegate, Grantham in Lincolnshire, living above the Singer Sewing Machine shop, where George is the Agent, and they have two young children, Gertrude M APPLEBY (born about 1880 in Grantham) and Montague W APPLEBY (born 1881 in Grantham). By 1901 they are to be found in Spittlegate with Gertrude, who is now 21 and an Elementary School Teacher, as well as sons Herbert Cecil (b 1883) and Ernest George (b 1892). George is now a Public Accountant, whilst son Montague, aged 21, is a Drapers Assistant in Leicester.
If there are any Lincolnshire APPLEBY researchers from this line out there I would love to hear from them. I have a great deal of information pertaining to the FOGG family with which they are connected!
Best wishes,

- John APPLEBY -- Dorothea Hooper, 15:50:40 03/26/04 Fri (63.167.255.201)
My great, great, great, great, great grandfather (on my Hooper line) was a John Appleby (b.1759, d.1826) who was a Loyalist with the 3rd regiment of the New Jersey Volunteers during the Revolutionary War in the U.S. He received a land grant in New Brunswick, Canada for his service to the crown but eventually ended up on my "home" island of Deer Island, N.B., Canada.
His great granddaughter married into the Hooper family line by marrying an Elmira Elizabeth Appleby (1854-1929)(m.Ernest Vincent Hooper 1849-1934). Incidently, his great grandson, John Warren Appleby III (1844-1867) also married a Hooper relative of mine: Eliza M. Hooper. So I am doubly related to the Appleby family line. They lived in a very small community called Chocolate Cove, Deer Island and there were not many families there to choose from when it came time to marry.
I am looking for information on the original John Appleby and wondering where he came from in "the colonies" (probably New Jersey due to his military affiliation) and when the family came to what would become the U.S. and from where. Easy, right?
Actually your line seems to be better researched than the two lines I am following back, Hooper and Doughty, father and mother, but they were also "Loyalists" so I have a strong tie to Canada and Great Britain. Thanks for any help. Email: drhooper@cogeco.ca

still hunting birth and parents of Joseph Appleby in about 1821/22 in Bethnal Green (according to censuses, marriage cert and death cert). Have been searching many years for these three brothers, all sons of William APPLEBY & Sarah BRUCE. William b.1821, Boxted; Benjamin, bc1826 ?Boxted/Lexden area & George, b.1834 Boxted, all Essex, England. Benjamin and George last found on the 1841 Census of Lexden. William never located on any census. Siblings include: Sarah Ann (WOODGATE), Caroline (KEARNS) & Marshall.
I have a photo of "Uncle APPLEBY" so at least we know one lived to maturity. Family story goes he was involved with sheep and the rest of the family expected to inherit money! Instead it went to widow and her children, whom he apparently married later in life.
We have search civil registration for a marriage to no avail. We wonder if he might have emigrated to AUS OR NZ.
If you are connected to any of these people in anyway, or if something rings a bell, I would love to hear from you.

My Grandfather Arthur Leslie Appleby was born in County Durham in 1918 to a Thomas and Minnie? Appleby. He lived in Cockfield as a child and had 2 brothers - Harry and Bobby - and 5 sisters - Muriel, Doris, June, Margaret (Peggy) and Miranda (twin of Peggy).
My family tree currently stops at Thomas and I would love for it to go back futher if anybody can help me. My Grandfather lost contact with his family as a young man and so it would be nice also to get details of the descendents of his brothers and sisters. We know that Miranda is now my Grandfather's only surviving sibling.

I am looking for my grandfather. All I know is that his name was Walter Lee Appleby and he either lived or was visiting Jacksonville, Illnois in 1899-1900. (My father was born in 1900; we do not know if his parents were married. My grandmother Clara Coffman would have been 17.) I did some research and found a Peter Appleby and a Robert Appleby living in Jacksonville around that time, but can not find any reference to Walter. It was a small town and he must have been related to them somehow. I remember being told that he came from England. Does anyone have any information??? HELP. Thanks.

- Ivan Dale Appleby killed in Vietnam ... -- Colin Appleby, 17:22:50 02/23/04 Mon (195.229.241.172)
Found this entry on the Internet. Have a recollection that someone on Appleby Research found a Dogtag in Vietnam for Ivan Dale Appleby. Anyone remember the entry of a few years ago.
Name: Ivan Dale Appleby
Rank/Branch: O4/US Air Force
Unit: 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Ubon AF TH
Date of Birth: 13 September 1930
Home City of Record: Fresno CA (Family in AZ, CO)
Date of Loss: 07 October 1967
Country of Loss: North Vietnam
Loss Coordinates: 204000N 1050800E (WH156796)
Status (in 1973): Missing In Action
Category: 2
Acft/Vehicle/Ground: F4D
Other Personnel In Incident: William R. Austin (Returned POW)
Source: Compiled by Homecoming II Project 31 April 1990 from one or more of the following: raw data from U.S. Government agency sources, correspondence with POW/MIA families, published sources, interviews.
UPDATE: REMAINS RETURNED 01/95, IDENTIFIED 10/95
SYNOPSIS: Major Ivan D. Appleby was the pilot of an F4D aircraft flying a photo
reconnaissance escort mission over North Vietnam in October 1967. His backseater
was Capt. William R. Austin II. Austin and Appleby were onboard the lead
aircraft in a flight of F4D Phantom fighter jets.
When the flight was over Hoi Binh Province about 25 miles southwest of the city
of Hoi Binh, it encountered intense hostile fire which inflicted heavy damage to
the lead aircraft. The aircraft began burning and went out of control. One
parachute was observed prior to the aircraft crashing into a hill.
The U.S. later learned that Austin had been captured, but Appleby's fate
remained uncertain. He was listed Missing in Action.
When American prisoners were released in 1973, Austin was among them, but
Appleby was not. In late 1976, based on no information to indicate he was alive,
Appleby was presumptively declared dead.
Nearly 2500 Americans did not come home from the war in Vietnam. Unlike "MIAs"
from previous wars, most of these men and women can be accounted for. Some
hundred were known to be held as prisoners, and some were photographed in
captivity. Others were alive and well the last time they were heard from,
describing an advancing enemy.
Years after our military involvement ended, reports of Americans held captive
continue to mount. Thousands of reports have been received related to Americans
missing in Southeast Asia, and many government officials now believe that
hundreds are still being held prisoner. The U.S. Government continues to press
the Vietnamese for information, as it has for nearly 20 years. The U.S. views
the problem as humanitarian, while the Vietnamese are concerned with
reconstruction aid promised by the United States in signed agreements, but not
delivered. Until we are willing to negotiate for their release, these Americans
will die in communist prisons wondering why their country abandoned them.
Ivan D. Appleby was promoted to the rank of Colonel during the period he was
maintained missing.
* DIA Homecoming (Egress Recap), April 24, 1973 quotes returnee William Austin
saying "After being hit by SAM, lost hydraulics, aircraft started to roll,
unable to control with rudder or ailerons. Aircraft CO ordered bailout. After
I bailed out, I did not see a chute or hear from Maj. Appleby again. I did
observe what I believe to be the aircraft impact approx 3-5 miles from where I
landed."

- Appleby of Channel Islands -- Adele Draginda, 19:47:17 12/31/03 Wed (24.69.255.203)
Has anyone researched the family of Henry Arthur APPLEBY of St. Andrews, Guernsey, Channel Islands? My great-aunt, Ada Mary BURNETT, married Henry (called Harry) November 22, 1899 in Freemantle, Hampshire, England. Henry's father was a William APPLEBY. Both were gardeners and residents of St. Andrews, Guernsey, C.I. (given as Henry's birth place in parish marriage information). Ada and Henry (Harry) appear on the 1901 census for Guernsey, C.I. as well as their first born son, William (b. about November 1900). They had two more sons whose names I do not know. From a 1919 photo there appears to be 6-8 years between William and the second son and 2-4 years between the second and third son. I am interested in any bits of birth/marriage/death information that anyone may be able to provide on this family.

Charles Edward Appleby was a brother of my grandfathers John William Appleby, two of the 13 children born to John William Appleby and Mary Jane Woodhouse. Charles was married to Eleanor(Nellie) and they had ( I think) 4 sons and 1 daughter. The sons were named Reggie, Raymond, Kenneth(who was killed in the war ) and Denis. Kathleen was brought up by her aunt until she was about 16 or so. In the 1940s Uncle Charlie and Auntie Nellie ran a trucking business, which was later run by their son Denis. Hope this is of some help.

- JOSEPH APPLEBY -- Daphne Eyers, 16:46:08 06/04/03 Wed (195.92.168.169)
Further to my earlier message :- according to 41, 51 and 71 censuses for Hackney Joseph was born about 1811/12, in Warwickshire at Moreton/Marton/Meriden? (difficult to decipher and the county was spelt Warrickshair). When some of his children were baptised his name was given as George and on his death certificate his name was William Joseph!
On the IGI there is a Joseph Appleby b.25-3-1812, bp 11-6-1813 at St. Phillip's, Birmingham, son of Samuel and Hannah. They also appear to have had 3 other children - William (bp 5-10 1809), Sarah (26-12-1814) and George (27-7-1818). There is a marriage for Samuel Appleby and Hannah Worrall at All Saints, West Bromwich on 7-1-1805 and a baptism for a Samuel at St Matthews, Walsall, parents Humphrey and Sarah. While Joseph and his wife Margaret did not name any of their children Samuel or Hannah they did have a Sarah, William and George.
There is also a baptism for a William Appleby, 25-1-1813, at Saint Martin's, Birmingham, parents James and Maria, who also appear to have had children Clarinda and George.
Does anyone know anything about these families that may help me decide if either Joseph or William is my 2xgt grandfather? In 1835 my Joseph married Margaret Hutchins at Shoreditch and lived the rest of his life in the Hackney area.

The 1851 Berkshire Census now transcribed and indexed on disk shows a widow Jane Appleby in Arborfield whose husband, recently dead, had been the Parish Clerk. Does anyone recognised this family?
Jane Appleby Head 70 widow - husband just died Parish Clerk (she was) born Wokingham

Jane Appleby 36 Dau U born Arborfield
Who was the husband and was he related to the William Appleby b. Doncaster 1806 who in 1851 was a House Steward at Arborfield Hall. I am researching the family of this William.
I assume the dead parish clerk was Thomas whose marriage to Jane Marlow 19 Dec 1803 is on the IGI, as are baptisms of their children.
