- William Appleby in Pennsylvania -- Sarah Appleby Berke, 23:39:50 07/26/09 Sun
There seem to be a lot of William Appleby's out there! We have four generations of them at least. My Gt. Grandfather was William recorded born Sept 7/1872 in Rosedale(?) York County and died 6/6/1925 in Arona(?) Pennsylvania...possibly suicide. He emigrated to the US and worked as a miner in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. He was married to Alice Stockdale from Durham. His father, William again, only record I have is died May 15/1904 in Irwin, PA, possibly born 1834 and married to a Katherine Augusta Cahill. Any info out there--we'd really appreciate it!

- Applebys of New Brunswick -- Aggi-Rose Reddn, 23:04:15 02/24/01 Sat
Hi!
My gtgtgrandparents were Annie Lenore Appleby & Harding Elsworth. They were married in Saint John,NB in 1856. Annie was the daughter of John, son of Peter. I am trying to verify if Peter was son of UEL Benjamin Appleby & his wife Sarah VanPelt or of UEL Peter & the relationship between the UEL Applebys (who apparently were * in number). I have marriage record for Benjamin & Sarah in NY, but am wondering if Benjamin is related to the Applebys of Schraalenbuerg,Bergen Co.,NJ. An LDS file includes birth records for Applebys whose names match those of the UELs but there seems to be a suggestion that Benjamin was from NY.
I'm very interested in getting in touch with other NB,NJ,NY Applebys in hopes of sorting this out properly.
It is also quite likely that Annie had siblings, but I have only her thus far.
The Applebys of Saint John were involved in shipbuilding. Benjamin is believed to have also had a shipyard on the Kennebecasis. I have ordered a CD which includes records on ships & seafarers of Atlantic Canada, so am hoping this will help to clarify how they fit together!

In 1881 she is found on the census living with Michael and Mary Appleby and their family and is described as a grand daughter. In 1901 she is found on the Isle of Wight working with Mary Appleby(daughter of the above Michael and Mary who both died in the 1880s).Maud is now calling herself Maud Appleby and both her and Mary are working at Broadlands as sewing matron and matron respectively. Broadlands is described as a training establishment for domestic servants. Since then I have no clue as to what happened to either of them. My late father had Mary Appleby, his aunt, as dying in 1908 but I can find no death for her.Is there anyone there who has come across either of these ladies?

- Samuel APPLEBY ? is he from Leeds -- Noreen Rose, 16:21:08 03/24/09 Tue
I am trying to find a birth place of Mary APPLEBY. Aged 19, with father Sam'l APPLEBY Farmer, when she married William KITCHING - father Edward, Carrier, in Myton on Swale, 1 March 1845. Both signed by a cross. Witnesses, Charles Wetherill and Mary Roberts who also signed by a cross.
I have her in the 1851 Census aged 26 of Green Hammerton. Next in 1861 she is born Whitley, aged 37 then in 1871 aged 45 born Sandforth. In 1881 aged 55 at Dansforth. I believe her death is registered on Free BMD at Easingwold aged 65.
I wonder where 'Whitley' is - it might have been a misheard place name by the census enumerator. However, I am unable to find the whereabouts of Sandforth/Dansforth.
I have recently found Samuel APPLEBY Bn 1787 Marrying Jane HOPKINSON in 1818 in Wortley Leeds. His father appears to be Benjamin. They have a son Benjamin KITCHEN - I found Samuel of Leeds has Benjamin APPLEBY as his father.

- Appleby family from Ireland 1800's -- Michelle Jackson, 13:13:25 11/15/08 Sat
I am trying to trace any Appleby's from Ireland. Specifically Julia Appleby who was an orphan sent as a free settler to Tasmania,Australia on the Calcutta in 1851. She was listed on the ship's passenger list as 17 years but there is some evidence that she was only 14 years old. Julia was born between 1834 and 1837 possibly in Cork.to qualify for this voyage the girls had to be orphans and most came from poor houses or work houses. Julia may have left from Cork and there is some evidence that she was born in Cork but she could have come from anywhere in Ireland. Her parents may have died in the famine.
Julia worked for a Rev Dr Lillie in Hobart until her marriage at SDpring Bay,Tasmania in 1855 to Edmund Ryan a convict from Thurles, Tipperary. Due to his drinking the marriage did not last but they did have 6 to 8 children. No records of what happened to Julia seem to exist.Any possible leads would be welcome.

- James Appleby -- Fred Punter, 23:15:14 11/05/08 Wed
I am researching the life of James Appleby, born Twickenham,UK on 11 June 1899, son of William Edwin Appleby. James served in WW1, served as a 2nd.Lt in Royal Flying Corps 62 Squadron, a pilot, his plane crashed in France in 1918, both he and his observer 2nd.Lt J M Holling were injured. In 1919 he joined the British South Africa Police in Southern Rhodesia, rose through the ranks and became Commissioner. He retired in 1954. He was married but I have no details of his wife or children, if there were any.
I can find out nothing about him after his retirement except an unconfirmed report that he died on 7th July 1985 but place of death is unknown, records checked in UK reveal no trace of his death and it is probable that he died in South Africa. I would like to know what he did after retirement and/or if he had any descendants.

By the 1881 Census, he was dead. Since he was an entertainer he moved around a lot. I am finding it hard to locate sources of information. I believe he was from a theatrical family and that he may have been born in London but this is conjecture. Iwould be very grateful of any help at all. thanks in anticipation. Lesley

- The name Appleby -- Christopher Rigg, 13:35:33 06/17/08 Tue
Is anybody working on the Celtic contribution to the place-names in Cumbria? There are two additional 'possibles'. Probably most of the northern and midland names with ‘apple’ are a corruption of the Old British apa, ‘water, river’, since they all adjoin a stream or river.
(1) < Old Norse epli, Old Swedish æple, Old English æppel, ‘apple’ + Old Norse by, ‘settlement, farmstead’ (Ekwall)
(2) < Old British apa, ‘water’ + Old Norse by, ‘settlement, farmstead’
The same word, also in a bilingual context, probably occurs in the name Kirkby Stephen < Kirk-By West-Efon: 'Church Village west of the river'.The w, here of 'west' was often lost in Norse, with Old British afon / apon, 'water, river'. Probably the Eden Valley was long bilingual around the 9th to 11th Century, with mixing of the two languages in dialect.

Hello Appleby researchers! My gr-gr-grandfather was Nathaniel Appleby BEAL, 1830-1908, of Bowdoin and Lisbon, ME. I do not know why his middle name was Appleby and would appreciate any tips in that connection!
He was a son of Nathaniel BEAL and Mary COOMBS. (The elder Nathaniel's father's name may have been Joshua.) Nathaniel Appleby BEAL married first Hannah E. SMALL in 1853, second Antoinette (Nettie) GRAVES in the very late 1860s. His grave in Bowdoin, Sagadahoc County, has a GAR-Civil War marker.
Oh, how happy I'll be if someone here can help me identify my Appleby connection! Thanks.

Just wondering if anyone out there has information on any Applebys in the Michigan area? My grandparents have all since passed and I am trying to find out information on my family "tree". My father and his three brothers are here in Michigan. Besides us, we are unaware of any Michiganders. My grandfather is John Appleby. Thank you for any information! :)

- Peter Appleby of Carleton Cty., N.B. -- Jo Ann Burton, 03:11:53 02/24/01 Sat
I am trying to find when and where Peter Appleby was born, any family that he had, and his relationship to John Francis Appleby(1840-1917) who invented the Appleby Knotter (grain binder). John was the son of James and Jane Appleby and was born in Westmorland, Oneida Cty, N.Y. My grandfather John Barter Appleby was told by his father Peter that he was related to the inventor. I am hoping that if I find his family I can perhaps find Peter's ancestors too.

- Appleby's from Wylam/Crawcrook to the USA -- Paul Appleby, 20:09:20 02/26/06 Sun
Hi
I have recently found out that two of my relatives left the UK via Liverpool to live in the USA. One was called Edward Appleby(dob 1899)born in Wylam, Northumberland England, who stayed in the US, and the other was Stanley Appleby (no dob) born in Crawcrook, near Newcastle upon Tyne, England, who went on up to Canada. They travelled together.
They went to work in the mines - their relatives were all coal miners.
I have checked the website that has passenger records, but although there are tons of Appleby's, alas none with these names.
My guess is that they travelled between 1919 and 1925.
I understand that Stanley went on to be a teacher (or perhaps his Canadian wife did - we are not sure).
I guess I am hoping that someone who reads this forum knows of relatives from Wylam/Crawcrook in England.
Kind regards
Paul Appleby

- Appleby Family - Westmoreland Jamaica -- Marjorie Clarke (very curious), 15:23:36 08/13/07 Mon
My mother's family name is Appleby and she is from Westmoreland in Jamaica. We recently moved to England and realised that there is a place called Appleby-in-Westmoreland here and think there must be some link with the Appleby family in Westmoreland Jamaica. My grandfather's name is Hubert Appleby and he died in 1958. He married Lila and they lived in Porter's Mountain in Westmoreland where they had several children. There are still a number of Applebys living in the area. Any information on the Applebys in Jamaica and their link to the people of Appleby-in-Westmoreland would be well appreciated.

- Minnie Appleby Tanner Gilbert(?) -- L. QUirk, 16:04:43 01/05/02 Sat
I am looking for information on Minnie Appleby born July 4, 1870 in Beekman, Dutchess Co., NY. Her parents were William (b: 1841 in Washington, NY)& Mary (Decker b:1846 in Plattekill, NY) Applebey. Minnie had two brothers Franklin (b:1867) and Edward (b:1880) who I have been able to find some information on. Minnie married James Egbert Tanner on June 6, 1888 in Wasaic, NY. They lived in Amenia/Dover Plains, NY and had two boys Allerton and Roy (my great, grandfather) in 1889 and 1891. Minnie and James separated prior to 1900 (I've found the family in the 1900 census minus Minnie) - the boys stayed with James. I believe they divorced and that Minnie remarried - perhaps F.M. Gilbert? I am looking for any information about Minnie after she left her marriage to James - I want to know where she went, when they were divorced, whether she remarried, were there other children and when/where she died (just for starters! :) ) Thanks!

- Eliza Appleby of Eastport, MAINE, USA c1840 -- Russ French (Peace and blessings), 04:11:21 07/03/07 Tue
I am trying to find the wife of my ggg-granfather, David McDonald. He may have used other names, such as Daniel or McDonnel. An old family record names his wife as Eliza Appleton, but this search has yielded no info. However, in the 1840 US Census for Eastport, Washington, Maine, USA, there is an Eliza Appleby. This might be my ancestress, as David and Eliza's son William McDonald was born in 1842 in the same county.
Would anyone have any light to shed on this?
Thaking you for your consideration, in Jesus, Russ French

- APPLEBY - Sheffield Flood (1864) -- Karen Lightowler, 14:05:16 02/09/03 Sun
Hi List
I am re-posting details of the APPLEBY family who died in the Sheffield Flood (12th March 1864) as I would dearly love to contact a descendant of this family.
Other names associated with this family are MARSHALL, BEARDMORE, KINSEY, SWIFT, DENNY (or DEMMY) and NIGHTINGALE. The details I have so far are:
Mary APPLEBY (nee MARSHALL) drowned in the flood. (Born 1801 married Cowton APPLEBY on 30.6.1823. Cowton was born 12.3.1802 in Scarborough, exactly 62 years to the day before Mary drowned. He died somewhere before the census in 1861. His parents were John and Mary and he had brothers William and John.)
Mary and Cowton had 10 children:
1. Mary Anne APPLEBY (born 14.4.1824 Winster) married on 14.10.1849 to John BEARDMORE with children Sarah A (born 1857) and George (born 1859)
2. Stephen Cowton APPLEBY (born 25.10.1825 Winster) married on 8.5.1849 to Elizabeth KINSEY. Their daughter Mary APPLEBY drowned in the flood at the age of just 13.
3. Eliza Christiana APPLEBY (born 30.10.1826 Winster) married to Charles SWIFT (born 1832 about Cromford) with daughter Ann E (born 1860 in Sheffield)
4. Ann Elizabeth APPLEBY (born 23.1.1828 Winster) married to Mr Denny or Mr Demmy??
5. John APPLEBY (chr 18.4.1830 Winster) married on 14.11.1849 to Ellen NIGHTINGALE.
6. Martha APPLEBY (chr 13.3.1831 Winster)
7. John Cowton APPLEBY drowned in the flood at the age of about 37. Married to Ellen (born about 1839 and died between 1861 and 1864) with children George (born 1860) and Annie Maria (born 1861)
8. Charles APPLEBY (born 28.6.1834 Winster)
9. William APPLEBY (born 29.10.1836 Winster- twin)
10. Cowton APPLEBY (born 29.10.1836 Winster - twin) married to Sarah A (born about 1840) with children William Cowton (born 1860), Charles (born 1863), Herbert (born 1869), Ernest (born 1871), Mary (born 1874) and Edith (born 1878)
I would love to hear from anyone who can fit any of the above into their family line.
Thanks

As far as I can tell, my ancestors (until my grandfather) kept pretty much within Oxfordshire.
I have them back to James Appleby and Mary Ann Lloyd (mid 1850's) mostly in Swyncombe. Other misc. places that I have heard about are;
Russells Water
Watlington
Nettlebed
Bix
Shiplake
Bosmore Farm (near Henley)
I would like to ask that anyone else who thinks they might connect to this group (Nearly all Agricultural Labourers) contact me at kjansen@ix.netcom.com
