Hello: My Appleby ancestors also have a connection to West Hartlepool. My grandfather, Gordon Edward Appleby (1885-1965) married Florence Elizabeth Marshall of West Hartlepool in about 1907 or 1908 (the Hartlepool Registry Office has no record of their marriage). Gordon and Florence emigrated to Canada right after that. Gordon had several brothers and sisters.

In checking the 1881 census I find only one Appleby in all of West Hartlepool, a Mary Appleby, who was an 18 year old "servant" in the home of the Murrell family at 3 Smith Cres. Mary was born in Coxhoe. I hope to be able to check the 1891 census soon to see if I can locate the family.

It may be worth your while to check with the Hartlepool Register Office, as they can advise if they have records, and you can then arrange to purchase copies. E-mail them at:
