- Pennsylvania Applebys -- Carolyn Appleby, 18:19:28 03/08/01 Thu (63.211.187.242)
I was born Carolyn Appleby in Homestead, FL in 1945. My father's name is James Melvin Appleby. I believe he was born in Pennsylvania. I am researching that info now. My Appleby ancestry began in Scotland with Robert B. Gordon (no dates) who married Janet Hill (no dates). They had at least one child, Fanny L. Gordon born Jan. 6, 1876. She married James Appleby (born April 17, 1875) on May 29, 1895 in Greensburg, PA. I have a James C. Appleby listed in my family bible with a date of death of September 12, 1914. Also listed in my bible is Janet Appleby who was born Feb. 17, 1897 who died February 24, 1900; Robert William Appleby born Jan. 14, 1988 and died Jan. 8, 1917; Albert E. Appleby born November 20, 1900 who married Leona Debolt on October 14, 1919 (my paternal grandparents); Gordon Linford Appleby born March 20, 1903 who married Hazel G. Stephen on April 19, 1938. Date of death for Gordon L. Appleby is listed as Sunday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m.(no year. The notation reads as follows: . . . "taken to Pittsburgh to L. B. Morelands. Services Tuesday 8 pm May 23. Taken to Clarksburg, W.VA May 24." Do any of these names ring any Appleby bells? If so, I would love to hear from you. So far I have made very little progress. I do know my gr grandmother died in 1968 and I have her SS# which was issued in Pennsylvania.

Robert had two children with Opel (? maiden name), Timothy Appleby and Cathy Appleby. I have two brothers, Chris Appleby and Craig Appleby. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Hello Appleby researchers! My gr-gr-grandfather was Nathaniel Appleby BEAL, 1830-1908, of Bowdoin and Lisbon, ME. I do not know why his middle name was Appleby and would appreciate any tips in that connection!
He was a son of Nathaniel BEAL and Mary COOMBS. (The elder Nathaniel's father's name may have been Joshua.) Nathaniel Appleby BEAL married first Hannah E. SMALL in 1853, second Antoinette (Nettie) GRAVES in the very late 1860s. His grave in Bowdoin, Sagadahoc County, has a GAR-Civil War marker.
Oh, how happy I'll be if someone here can help me identify my Appleby connection! Thanks.

Alas no- so if anyone is related to this person then I would be happy to part with the certificate.

An old family record names his wife as Eliza Appleton, but this search has yielded no info. However, in the 1840 US Census for Eastport, Washington, Maine, USA, there is an Eliza Appleby. This might be my ancestress, as David and Eliza's son William McDonald was born in 1842 in the same county.
Would anyone have any light to shed on this?

- Luke Appleby of New Brunswick, Canada (born c. 1779, in England) -- Joyce, 20:01:55 04/06/10 Tue (67.101.3.39)
Luke Appleby was a GGG grandfather of mine. All I have to go on regarding Luke is information in the 1871 Census of Canada. According to the 1871 Census, he was born about 1799 in England; his wife's name was Sally (birth surname unknown), also born in England, about 1801; he had at least one child, John or James Edward Appleby (1829-1890), who was my GG grandfather. John's daughter, Maud (Appleby) Pevlin (1862-1946), was my great grandmother. These Applebys resided in or near Gagetown, Queens Co., New Brunswick. Apparently, they were not United Empire Loyalists, although it's possible that they were somehow related to the Applebys who came to New Brunswick after the American Revolution. I seem to have hit a brick wall with Luke. If anyone has any information about this Appleby family, especially about Luke or Sally, please post it here. Much thanks! -- Joyce

I am trying to locate the ancestors of Adoniron Judson Appleby, born in Wickham, Queens Co, NB, circa 1865. His parents are William and Isabelle (or possibly Jane) Akerly. His mother left the home when he was 4-5, and eventually he was raised by another local family. He became a seaman, and although owning a farm in that area, would go to sea, leaving his wife and children behind. In 189- the vessel he was on, The Dion, was wrecked off Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Following that, he remained at home with his family until his death in the early 1900s.
Would appreciate any info you might have on this family.

My ggrandmother Florence APPLEBY married Joseph Ridgway SWAIN at St. George, Hanover Square, London on April 19, 1892. The marriage certificate shows her age as 33 and her current residence as Buckingham Palace Road, but I don't know if this was a permanent address, or (perhaps because they had only come to London for the wedding) merely that of their temporary lodging. Joseph gave his residence as Maids Moreton, Bucks, so she may have hailed from there as well.
Florence's father Henry witnessed the auspicious event, along with an Elizabeth Appleby (her mother?) and one 'A. Appleby', but this is all I know for sure about my APPLEBY line.
Anybody see any connections with their own lines?
Thanks in advance.

I have her in the 1851 Census aged 26 of Green Hammerton. Next in 1861 she is born Whitley, aged 37 then in 1871 aged 45 born Sandforth. In 1881 aged 55 at Dansforth. I believe her death is registered on Free BMD at Easingwold aged 65.
I wonder where 'Whitley' is - it might have been a misheard place name by the census enumerator. However, I am unable to find the whereabouts of Sandforth/Dansforth.
I have recently found Samuel APPLEBY Bn 1787 Marrying Jane HOPKINSON in 1818 in Wortley Leeds. His father appears to be Benjamin. They have a son Benjamin KITCHEN - I found Samuel of Leeds has Benjamin APPLEBY as his father.

- DULCIE APPLEBY GATESHEAD NEWCASTLE -- TOMMY DONAGHY, 23:06:36 06/15/05 Wed (172.213.198.62)
I am looking for any information about Dulcie Appleby c.1918.
She came from the Gateshead area of Newcastle.
I know she has a daughter June, and possibly three sons, Ronald, Edward, and David. Their fathers are not known as she was not married when any of them were born, so I don`t know if they have different fathers.
Later she married a man called Johnny Cairns.
Any help would be great.
Thanks.

- Appleby family from Ireland 1800's -- Michelle Jackson, 13:13:25 11/15/08 Sat (58.168.232.178)
I am trying to trace any Appleby's from Ireland. Specifically Julia Appleby who was an orphan sent as a free settler to Tasmania,Australia on the Calcutta in 1851. She was listed on the ship's passenger list as 17 years but there is some evidence that she was only 14 years old. Julia was born between 1834 and 1837 possibly in Cork.to qualify for this voyage the girls had to be orphans and most came from poor houses or work houses. Julia may have left from Cork and there is some evidence that she was born in Cork but she could have come from anywhere in Ireland. Her parents may have died in the famine.
Julia worked for a Rev Dr Lillie in Hobart until her marriage at SDpring Bay,Tasmania in 1855 to Edmund Ryan a convict from Thurles, Tipperary. Due to his drinking the marriage did not last but they did have 6 to 8 children. No records of what happened to Julia seem to exist.Any possible leads would be welcome.

- James Appleby -- Fred Punter, 23:15:14 11/05/08 Wed (80.6.42.28)
I am researching the life of James Appleby, born Twickenham,UK on 11 June 1899, son of William Edwin Appleby. James served in WW1, served as a 2nd.Lt in Royal Flying Corps 62 Squadron, a pilot, his plane crashed in France in 1918, both he and his observer 2nd.Lt J M Holling were injured. In 1919 he joined the British South Africa Police in Southern Rhodesia, rose through the ranks and became Commissioner. He retired in 1954. He was married but I have no details of his wife or children, if there were any.
I can find out nothing about him after his retirement except an unconfirmed report that he died on 7th July 1985 but place of death is unknown, records checked in UK reveal no trace of his death and it is probable that he died in South Africa. I would like to know what he did after retirement and/or if he had any descendants.

- WILLIAM APPLEBY -- Helen Savage nee Appleby, 16:29:43 09/30/08 Tue (79.72.161.127)
I have recently obtained a marriage certificate of a William Appleby and Jane Wigfield who were married at Holy Trinity, Stockton on Tees in 1843. Unfortunately this is not the William Appleby in my family tree. If there is anyone to whom the above couple are related, I am willing to pass the marriage certificate onto them. I am still looking for my William born 1816 in Stockton. I have just found him on the 1851 census (aged 34) in London where he was a visitor BUT cannot find him after that.

- The name Appleby -- Christopher Rigg, 13:35:33 06/17/08 Tue (84.80.238.51)
Is anybody working on the Celtic contribution to the place-names in Cumbria? There are two additional 'possibles'. Probably most of the northern and midland names with ‘apple’ are a corruption of the Old British apa, ‘water, river’, since they all adjoin a stream or river.
(1) < Old Norse epli, Old Swedish æple, Old English æppel, ‘apple’ + Old Norse by, ‘settlement, farmstead’ (Ekwall)
(2) < Old British apa, ‘water’ + Old Norse by, ‘settlement, farmstead’
The same word, also in a bilingual context, probably occurs in the name Kirkby Stephen < Kirk-By West-Efon: 'Church Village west of the river'.The w, here of 'west' was often lost in Norse, with Old British afon / apon, 'water, river'. Probably the Eden Valley was long bilingual around the 9th to 11th Century, with mixing of the two languages in dialect.

- lawrence appleby, 1700's northumberland... -- jo bath, 10:21:10 02/23/01 Fri (203.12.165.8)
i got here purely by chance and have no appleby connections myself, but i work with early modern northumberland quarter sessions records, and if no-one has checked them before, you might be intersted to know about one lawrence appleby of newburn, near newcastle upon tyne, a colourful character of the 1700's; i have depositions relating to disputes with his servants and neighbours, accusations of wife beating, and a complaint made by him about being thrown in a dung heap by a group of local women. now this may not be much use to anyone from a geneological point of view, but its certainly diverting, and if anyone wants i can post up a copy....
