Since posting my message I have accessed the UK 1901 census and discovered James Appleby remarried to Sarah ? and had 4 children - James Edward, Christopher J, Mary A and Ellen W. They were all born in Lambeth Surrey between 1884 and 1888 . At the time of the 1901 census they were living in Felling, Co. Durham and running a grocery store.
