Subject: Applebys of Old Lyme, CT and Brooklyn, NY, USA

John F. APPLEBY was born in Old Lyme, Connecticut in 1822 and died there in 1896. He was married to Emily S. ROBBINS, born 1825, also of Old Lyme, on August 1, 1841 by the Rev. D.S. Brainard. The 1850 US Census reveals that John F. APPLEBY's occupation was "farmer" and that he and Emily had several children at that time: John Henry (my great-great grandfather) b. 1843; Harriet, b. 1845; Nelson, b. 1848; and Martha, b. 1849. Further research reveals children born after this date, several of whom died young.

John H. APPLEBY fought in the Civil War as a private in Co. C of the 26th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers. He enlisted on Aug. 29, 1862, and was honorably discharged on Aug. 17, 1863. John H. APPLEBY married Annie GILL, b. 1844 in England, in Old Lyme in either January or June of 1865. Their first child, Margaret APPLEBY, my great-grandmother, was born in Old Lyme on Nov. 1 in either 1865 or 1866. At some point John moved his family to Brooklyn, NY and worked as a fireman. They had at least three other children: Thomas; Edward, b. 1874; and Zoie, b. July 1, 1881 in Brooklyn. After Annie Gill APPLEBY died in Brooklyn on Nov. 29, 1887, John married Elizabeth, an Irish immigrant widow, on March 16, 1889. John died on Nov. 7, 1891 in Brooklyn. His second wife abandoned 10-year old Zoie, who was taken in by John's eldest daughter, Margaret, now married to English immigrant Henry FLETCHER, and who had three children of her own at this point.

Margaret APPLEBY and HENRY FLETCHER eventually had seven children, among whom was my grandmother, Margaret FLETCHER, born in Brooklyn in 1894.
