Ms Kwan,
I am afraid I cannot agree to your comment about Regina Ip in your Ming Po column yesterday. Ip is resented by most HK people not because of her look, but because of her act and attitude. Specifically, there are several points in your article that you should recosider:
1. you said compared with the offending remarks she made, HK people made more offending remarks in return, to the extent of 1:99. I must point out, as a public servant paid by the HK people to work for the HK people, she has no right to make even one offending remark. How often do you offend your boss in the office? And will you tolerate your employee to treat you like how Ip did? That's the most important point. We are her BOSS!!!
2. Secondly, if she offended the HK people, what she should receive should be 6,800,000 remarks in return, not just 99.
3. I was a civil servant and worked in the same office with Ip before. If any of her staff dared to treat the public in the same manner as she did now, I am sure she would have taken serious action to fire the staff!
4. It is not true that civil servants needed not resign nor be accountable for wrong doing or poor performance. If you remember, the former Secretar of Transport, Scott, was removed after the serious transportation problem in Kings Road in the early 1980s. There are many such examples. The truth is just opposite: the former colonial governmnet would not have allowed someone like Ip to stay for so long and commit so many mistakes.
5. Finally, and most important of all, in a modern society and a modern business world, what is important is the result of your work, not how much effort you made. If you made a lot of effort but still could not achieve any result, you should just step down and let others try. The traditional Chinese saying of "just plough and don't ask the harvest" is not meant for such situation like managing a government. This is waste of resource.

Why we need to attack bad comments and bad attitudes? Because we want them to know that we are angry, and we'll not tolerate such bad performance!

I look forward to your response. Thanks.
