Well the Vega gt built by the chevy division already had gone about as far as was possible with the original engine in it's 140 version , sport suspension and a number of things that were designed into the car for better handling than any other small car in its class. in the car and driver small car competition they held over a three year period Patrick Bedard clinched the title with a vega GT which outran and outhandled every other car in the class despite all the faults the engine had thanks to being an alloy block type that no one really had a good example of at the time.
in 1975 they built the Cosworth Vega using the Cosworth engine used in racing and it was quite successful though only offered for two years and by then Chevy was bucking the bad rep the vega had gotten from some of the early production and design problem they had from essentially rushing the car into production and not having solved all the things that caused the faults the Vega was known for.
Fisher Body made the body and used a hot tank undercaoting process that failed to caot the seams in the front fender causing the rustout problems there and along the door areas etc. these were eventyually solved but not until after the car had a bad rep. The engiine block failures were the real problem they had to deal with and this was solved by the last few years the car was made in it's 9 year run. but the bad rep was already there and the car was taken out of production though the wagon body and the notchback I think were used for other chevy cars that were not called unsafe. Once again NAder and his " safety " organisation trashed the car without knowing what the causes were and that they had been fixed by the time he was doing that. recalls however continued for at least two years after production ceased which helped create the impression that GM made poorly designed and badly deficient small cars , a rep they took decades to overcome.

Johnathan Price who attended FC had a Cosworth Vega here in Harding. He lived a street over from here through the woods and often showed up at the station I worked at. That oCsworth Vega was a sweet machine and the only drawback to the engine was that if something went wrong with it they had to send it back to england for repair .
