Japan did have an ongoing nuclear weapons programme during
the war and stories arose that scientists had constructed a
prototype weapon that was to be tested on August 12, 1945 but the Red Army occupied the area before the test was carried out.
The Soviets never revealed any information about what was found
in the area. The Japanese did ask their German allies for uranium oxide and 560 kg of it was loaded on the submarine U-234 but the u-boat surrendered to allied authorities when
German forces in the Atlantic were ordered to stand down. U-234
was taken to Portsmouth, NH where the crew was interned and the cargo examined. It is believed that the uranium oxide was neither weapons grade or capable of being refined into
weapons grade stock. It was thought that the oxide was intended for use as a catalyst for making synthetic methanol for use in aviation fuel.
