True Fred and while the draft ended in 73 and the " official announcement of the end of the war was in 75 the troops were already mostly out in 74 except for the guard detachment at the embassey who were there til the end.
Effectively thanks to cutting off the funding for the south we were disassociated for the most part for almost two years by the end days.
The college deferrment ( SS 102 ) was a passe' thing after the draft was ended and dodging the draft by going to college was never as certain as some might think.
Ask any of the guys who had to go through the draft registration and pre callup proceedure . SOme rather interesting stories there for FC students who went through it including one well known member of the community who tried to get a deferrment by doing a certain drug that changed his bloodpressure and so forth then found out he had flat feet and need not have gone through the effort ( later I think that was no longer a deferrment but it was at the time ).
Wheeler running the draft advisory out of the closet near the mailboxes ( anyone still have a copy of Tulies book maybe a reprint in mimeo ? ) . 1001 ways to beat the draft.......
I just cracked up when Larry used to tell of the situation when they were protesting the draft since with really short hair and his large muscular size he did not look the part and got flak from the cops ( oh yeah the pigs my mistake never mind ) and the really interesting part was that he had already spent some time in a kibbutz where he was in under constant threat had basic military training from there and was not in the least intimidated at all but was a staunch pacifist none the less.

Maybe in the early years there was a draft dodge option but not that effective at all .
My own situation was pretty good as the local draft board where I was registered was the largest in the country with the most potential draftees to draw from and there were plenty of volunteers so no real threat of getting drafted.
The lottery was never a threat either since with a surname in the middle of the alphabet and a birthday near the middle I never got called up that way then got assigned number 184 out of 365 ( was there an extra for feb 29th I wonder ) so the same never reached me luck held through out until I got my 1-H . I did kow guys who got drafted who were either january birth when it was month oriented or had very low numbers like 2 and 3 in the numerical lottery or had surnames near the front of the alphabet before they decided that alphabetical was not equal opportunity .

Now politics .... there's another game altogether.
Maybe one of the things that helped get FC in trouble was when they made it law that college students could register to vote in their college state. There was a plitical science class that engaged in a project to register as many young voters as possible when the 18 yr old vote came in then ran a democrat against the local guy who was a republican and beat him in the state elections. Never mind he was on the board of the college trustees and that most of the other boiard members at the time were his supporters. Why take into account that it might upset the board and turn them against the college for upseting the apple cart of local politics...... ;>)
