Thanks Fred and Bill. I saw Buffy St. Marie sometime in the early 70's in NYC.
I had her recordings and was quite taken with her. Here is where she explains how she came to write the Universal Soldier:

Lady Bird also blacklisted Eartha Kitt. In fact there were several performers that were blacklisted during the LBJ administration.
I do think Buffy was against the war though.
