The 1812 war was a big waste of time money and resources for both sides.

The brit invasion of DC was turned back more by the sudden bad weather than the forces who opposed them though when they did meet the locals I believe managed very well against the brit regulars.

The Battle of New Orleans which tragically happened after the end of the war was a big defeat for the brits but then again the weather was a big factor with dense fog that hid the defense until it was too late or maybe the brits would have done their part differently.

As for invading CAnada it was always a bad move for a number of reasons. Local terrain that the invaders were not familliar with, very bad supply lines and usually poor invasion troops though the brits did a good job against the french ( a nominal tie but as good as a win ) in the French and Indian wars and the later invasions were not very well planned.
However I must point out that in all of those cases the Canadian provinces were separate entities for the most part with east and west canada, the maratimes and the New Foundland territory not yet united. That didn't happen until after the Finian invasion post civil war when the CAnadians finally decided they were better able to defend themselves if they finally united as one dominion ( with the exception of NewFoundland which held out til around the time of the second world war as a separate and equal province to the dominion ).
The Finians who were civil war vets supporting the Irish rebellions of the late 1800s made a number of attacks and usually were sucessful against the canadians ( not US invasion though the canadians did hold it against us for some time until around the second world war when all of a sudden we were thick as theives with each other ).
Those invasions are credited with uniting canada into one nation and interestingly the invaders were the first to use the designation of the Irissh Republican Army coining the IRA designation for actions against the british empire.

By the way one of my step grandfathers relatives was both a politician and a judge in Ontario as well as a commander of one of the Canadian military forces who fought in that series of conflicts, A gentleman by the Name of Clarke. I beleive one of his decendants was also recently a holder of high office there as well.

I do remember visiting the family in Toronto and emember the city back in the fifties as a great place at least in the summer.

My dad visted back before the second world war I think when he was single and was out on the lake with one of the " cousins " when they were buizzed by the Canadian AF team that performed the stunts while in a canoe.
Scared the poor girl silly and really pissed off my dad when they came almost head high over the canoe.

Maybe they were scared of another invasion ?
maybe they saw a good looking girl in on the water and came down for a closer look.....
