Subject: Why I have decided to vote for Obama

LOL! I am laughing because I can imagine some of the looks on your faces. Yes, I mean what I typed. That part is not a joke.

You all know that I was a banking regulator, but maybe some have forgotten. My experience with the deregulation of the S & L's and the outcome of that fateful decision has shaped much of my perspective in this aspect of political philosophy. As much of a fan of small government I am, I cannot allow one aspect of my philosophy to override my experiences and observation as a banking examiner. I saw the need for re-regulation after the S & L debacle. The same concept applies here with this even worse crisis we now face. However, my fellow conservative republicans seem to be stuck on their ideology of little government intrusion into business/finance/banking. While I know that the decision to allow banks to invest in derivative-based mortgage-backed securities far predates Bush I am also aware that this "small government" philosophy has strongly contributed to our regulators being asleep at the wheel before this crisis ensued. I also know personally that my former employer (Office of Thrift Supervision) was decimated by the Bush administration and consumer protection regulations were ignored. This totally goes against my belief in the constitutional requirement that our government on behalf of the general welfare (wll being) of our people. I was a strong advocate for consujmer protection while at OTS. Their (the "conservative") disdain for consumer protection laws has not pleased me... at all.

So, I have decided that the banking/finance industry sorely needs re-regulation and I do not trust conservative republicans (though I would trust a Giuliani or Hawaii's governor Lindle) to oversee the regulatory reforms and government programs that are needed to address this crisis and the future. This is the main reason I will vote for Barack Obama. Other reasons include the need for alternative fuels, plus the fact that I believe that Obama -while a liberal, often thinks "outside the box" an does not allow sheer ideology to shape his policy decision.

So, Ned. Don't choke on your coffee/drink; but I am joining you, Dawg, and all you folks in voting for Obama.

-Now I am going to go smell some more Pacific sea air and mix with the locals here in Kauai (who call Obama a fellow Hawaiian).

ALOHA! :-)
