The Ami was always my favorite version of the 2CV. It had a fantastically shaped body (in the early years with reverse-sloping rear window).

The interior was very chic, and the dashboard, with the umbrella handle shifter (like my old Renault 4) was really slick.

The doors were double paneled (unlike the basic 2CV), and about a foot thick because the outer panel curved out so far.

Back when I was a student at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht, I had a good friend (Leo Korpus) who ALWAYS had an Ami, and had owned a string of them for years. He had some uncles in the wrecking business who would set them aside for him. I could never convince him that I should get at least one...

The car I really wanted, though, was a DAF 55. It had a constant variable 'Variomatic' transmission (with twin belts on the 55). I almost had one; but I hesitated and lost out.
