Subject: Citroën Dyane....
In reply to: M.Denil 's message, "The Citroën Ami was the Luxury / sport version of the 2CV" on 18:05:18 10/15/08 Wed

I prefered the Dyane for a deluxe 2CV version. I looked around for one but came across a good deal on a Fiat
124 and ended up with that. 124's were common across Europe
and it was probably one the best cars that Fiat ever built.
Other Fiat models like the 127 and 128 had the Fix it again, Tony reputation as quirky, troublesome cars, the 124 and its slightly larger cousin the 125 were pretty reliable and Fiat garages were everywhere. When I drove it in
eastern Europe people often mistook it for a Russian-built
LADA which looked almost identical except for the
badging. Since Russians weren't held in very esteem in such
regions, I often had to go to some lengths to demonstrate that I wasn't Russian myself. This was expecially
true in post Prague Spring Czechoslovakia. I drove
into a small town about 50 km. outside of Prague and went
into a little restaurant to get something to eat and basically got the cold shoulder. After some explaining, I
assured them I was neither Russian or KGB. I asked
what on earth made them think I was KGB. They said
my clothes looked exactly like KBG agents wore. I
can't remember exactly what I was wearing, but it seemed to be quite conventional at least to me. Then I asked if they had noticed the car had German number plates on it and
they said that made them even more suspicious because it was common for KGB cars to bear number plates from western countries and they often carried western passports and identity cards. Once all that was aside, they were very friendly and put a nice meal together for me and said it was on the house. One of them suggested that if I wanted to
travel a lot in the east by car, I should get a Trabant, "no one will ever think you're KGB in one
of those."
