Hi, Katy!

Not sure how this site works, and don't want to use up too much space.... This is what I remember.

Yes, I wore the blue and white uniforms, which were required to be name tagged, much to my mother's horror, as she didn't sew. Every week, we'd dump them into a bag to send to the regional laundry, and they would come back starched and ironed. Bathing suits were your own.

I remember the following:

The entrance to the camp was made of limbs, and spelled the name CAMP FARWELL.

My sister was in a cabin named "Blue Candle." I know that because up until 3 years ago I had her wooden tennis racquet, which was in a wooden press with "Blue Candle" written on it. In those days, racquets were not metal and warped. I don't remember my cabins, but think at least one was named after a tree, possibly pine.

I remember sitting under the pine trees while a counselor read us Winnie the Pooh and Mary Poppins books.

I remember memorizing the most famous tennis players (from the 30's and 40's), like Don Budge. We were required to do this, and I believe we sat in a lodge for instruction.

I started my love of horses at that time. My favorite was a horse named Admiral, and was told he was a decendant of the famouse racehorse Man O' War and his son War Admiral. I won a blue ribbon on him. I did not jump, as I was only 8 and 9 years old in my two stays at Farwell, and either they did not offer jumping, or I was too young. I remember a turnstile near the barn. Is it still there?

Parents' Weekend, my mom and dad stayed at Lake Morey Inn, where we'd go for dinner, and I'd swim myself silly as they had cocktails.

I remember the Bean Supper at a nearby Farmers' Grange Hall. We hiked seveeral miles there, ate beans, franks, potato salad and cake, and then camped overnight in a cow pasture. We watched our step when walking around.

I won a tennis trophy 2nd year, along with my blue ribbon.

Food was excellent, especially the breakfasts. Even the oatmeal was great. Do they still have LVOT?

We sang a lot. "You Can't
Get to Heaven" was my favorite...lyrics like: "You can't get to Heaven in a 'lectric chair, 'cause the Lord don't want no fried meat there" I found really funny at the time.....

I entered a diving contest off the dock. I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO DIVE.

I remember the weekend swims before breakfast when the air was colder than the water. I think I swam across the lake at some point,

We had rowboats and canoes, but no sailboats at that time.

I remember the team competitions, White and Blue Teams, I think. There was ssome sort of team sport with a goal and a bowling pin, kind of a cross between soccer and hockey.

I did not keep in touch with my cabin mates, but then I was VERY YOUNG AND DIDN'T KNOW ANY BETTER. I am trying to get my daughter to consider sending her daughter, now 7, next year to Camp Farwell.

Hope this gives you a little insight as to the 40's experience. I did love going there, and stopped only because I wanted to be with my friends at home.

Of course, there were no tv's, computers, and telephones at our disposal. Possibly, we had movies (in black and white.)

Would love to hear about the camp from your point of view.

Thanks for listening!
Anne
