After receiving negative results regarding BRCA1, Lani believes in her immunity to ovarian and breast cancers. However, the article maintains that BRCA1 and other inherited gene mutations are not the leading causes of breast cancer, to which Lani thus remains susceptible. Therefore, her impression that she has been "spared" is a false sense of security--not from ovarian, but from breast cancer. This error can have the positive effect of a sugar pill: By simply believing that she is in the clear, Lani may alter her health for the better. However, such a situation is dubious and she would be better off asking her doctor for all the facts before she takes any actions.
