In reply to: Sister Karen 's message, "Case Study: Testing Family Bonds" on 14:22:39 11/03/03 Mon

The article says that Sherry feels isolated and remote. Couneling her through it would not be an easy task, but can be done. I would tell Sherry that although her sister was not tested positive it does not mean that her sister Lani has in any way abandoned her. I would tell her that Lani may not know how it feels to know you have cancer, but she will always be there for Sherry in anyway she may need her. I would remind Sherry that although it is upsetting that she has cancer the fact that her sister does not is merely a difference between them. The two were never exactly the same before the testing, but that did not prevent them from having a strong bond. Cancer, although worse than the others, is just another difference between them and it should not effect the bond between them and not cause Sherry to feel "isolated and remote". There may be a new difference in Sherry, but there should not be a change in the sisters' relationship.
