Barbara Biesecker, the genetic counselor, says that a positive result is not always negative. I think she means that finding out that someone has the marker gene for breast cancer can be a good thing becuase it will prepare them for the future. If someone knows they have the gene, then they can start taking preventive measures to help with the cancer before it even develops. Fighting it before it occurs is a good thing. On the other hand, a negative result is not always positive. Just because the test shows that one does not carry the marker gene, this does not mean that the person has no chance of getting cancer. Since a small percentage of breast cancers are caused by gene mustations, this leaves a lot of room for other ways. So, by getting a negative result, people may assume that they are free from cancer completely, which may not be the case at all.
