Positive results from a genetic test may be heartbreaking, but these results are not the worst news in the world. If a person is found to have a gene mutation, like Sherry, it does not necessarily mean that that person will develop the disease. Although Sherry's suspition that she carried the mutated gene was confirmed, that knowledge inspired her to take positive action and begin her battle with the disease. It is truly admirable that she is using her first hand experience with genetic testing to cousel others in her position. Bieseker also says that a negative result of genetic testing is not the best news in the world. This is also evident in Sherry's and Lani's experience because Lani felt the guilt of being free of the genetic mutation while her sister was not so fortunate. The women's relationship bond is weakened because of their luck or lack there of. In addition, negative results of a genetic test do not completely rule out the possibility of Lani developing cancer because many other factors contribute to this disease aside from BRCA1 and BRCA2.
