Positive test results for genetic mutations are not always definitive diagnoses that one will acquire the gene; therefore, I agree with Natalie in that they are not always the worst news in the world. There is still a chance that a person who tests positive will not necessarily develop the disease. Sherri is found to have ovarian cancer and later discovers that she indeed has an alteration in BRCA1. However, she turned this negative experience into a positive by becoming a genetic counselor and using her knowledge to help others. Biesecker conversly remarked that a negative result is not always the best news in the world. I agree with Natalie again, here, because a negative test only eliminates the chance of alteration within the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, but other factors can also contribute to ovarian cancer. In addition, on an emotional level, a positive test for one sister and a negative test for the other can leave the latter feeling guilty. In the case of Lani and Sherry, their sisterly bond is threatened, which is a negative outcome to the negative test results.
