Despite a negative result in genetic testing for breast cancer, it may give someone a false sense of security. Only a small percentage of breast cancer is caused by inherited genes, which leaves a large percentage to have breast cancers that do not carry the gene. In Lani’s case, she tested negative for a genetic marker for breast cancer, but that does not mean she is saved from ever having breast cancer. She has the same chances of those who do not have the genetic marker to develop breast cancer later in her life. Breast cancer can develop in many ways that do not pertain to genetics.
