In reply to: Lauren 's message, "Question 5" on 14:40:53 12/10/03 Wed

Lauren is right in feeling a mix of emotions in learning the genetic results. A patient could first go through a period of self pity asking,"Why me?". The patient could then feel a sense of anger towards their parents and/or God for saddeling them with a hardship in the the mutation. The patient then could go through a mixture of guilt and happiness. They could feel guilt for being angry at their sibling for not having the mutation when they should feel happy. They could also feel genuine happiness for their sibling because they do not have the burden of the mutation.
The sibling could also have a mix of emotions too. The sibling could feel relief that they do not have the mutation. They could also feel guilty that their sibling does have the mutation. This guilt could cause the sibling without the mutation to feel obligated to help in any way with any care or assistants their sibling may need.
