Agreed and I would only add this.

The Xander Harris character not only vanished but degraded. As in "went in reverse". Look at most anything in Seasons 1 and 2 then at Season 3 (Zeppo). It was the only main character (again seasons 1 and 2) that I can remember that actually dissolved onscreen on any TV series.

I have been thinking on why this may have been important, for me anyway. After season 2, and maybe half of three, the series lost all of its strong male Scoobie characters. The show was a female vehicle, without question, but I beleive it lost soemthing (comedic edge - humanity) when the Xander, Giles and Oz (werewolf part of the time I know) characters began to fade. Other aspects took its place (the Riley thing, the lesbian thing, etc etc) but much of this involved really non scooby characters with part time roles.

I dont know - just thinking out loud here - I don't know yet where I am going with this...but something in the Seasonal transitions involving the Xander character just bugs me - maybe I am not used to having a series I always enjoyed change into something I liked less - maybe because without any male Scooby characters I found it difficult not only to identify with any other characters on the show but felt it really lost that comic verbal edge.

Now, ladies and gentlmen, Mr Freud will speak for a few minutes - then we'll break for lunch.
