I thought it was a question of deniability. Claiming not to be The Doctor could be sustainable, for all we know no-one has ever met 'him' in person but the fact of having the demon eggs in his basement can be established simply by a visual inspection. Keeping them for a friend is a fallback position which will not elicit much sympathy/credence but may work up to a point. The money is out of the window anyway.
