a nail biter the whole way; Sheets started great but had one bad inning; Penn’s starter had a bad first inning but was otherwise very good; Going into extra innings Columbia got all three of its runs in the first and Penn got all of its runs in the third; from the bottom of the 3rd until the bottom of the 10th no runs were scored. Only sour note for me was the Penn play by play guy who was pretty over the top in his pro Penn comments.

seems weird -- the Yale poster who found us "rude" for some reason - what must that Eli have thought when the 4th seed Harvard ousted the home team in the tournie? I wonder...

I was worried about facing Penn and I assumed we would meet up with Yale again... but things have shifted like a crafty double steal play! Now we are in the catbird seat (I think some old time baseball pundit said that) - so to speak.

wonder if pitcher Andy Leon can take another year ?

James Thurber's short story, The Catbird Seat, was published in 1942. Red Barber - Cincinnati Reds, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees radio and television announcer - popularized the words; and published an autobiography of his own in 1968: Rhubarb In The Catbird Seat.

I'm sorely undeserving of your praise, i.g. Son of the South, Red Barber was my most favorite announcer when I was a Brooklyn boy, so many years ago; and you may know that he attended University of Florida - studied education and initiated his broadcasting career working for the college radio station in Gainesville; till, one day, he got a call from the Reds asking him to come out to Cincinnati and join their team.

Was Harvard's starting pitching in the game that ended Yale's season really named Brian Dowling? Unreal.

Valmas, You old timer, you! Red Barber was great. As a kid Yankee fan, I loved Mel Allen. “Howdy everybody.” His signature send off of a HR has never been topped, IMO. Maybe it’s the nostalgist in me.

Ballantine Ale. How did it go? “You have a ring, add a ring, and then another ring and you have 3 rings.”

Enjoy a meal at that restaurant symbolically on me, if it’s still in business. Cheers.

B, the iconic Mel Allen is best remembered for, "How about that?" and, of course, as you allude to, his home run call: https://youtu.be/ZvqqOAIKDmI?si=cFCvbKnHz8HTr41w

Thank you for your mention of the exemplary American who offered us clear evidence as to what one can accomplish by staying true to the near twin concepts of patience and perseverance. Though I'm a bit dismayed with your reference to a "symbolic meal" - this very moment, our power brokers are killing starving children in Africa with their offerings of even less than symbolic meals ....
So, consider yourself welcome to come out to The Bronx one splendid afternoon this summer and take in a game at The Stadium, from the bleacher area with me - we even currently have an Ivy League, first baseman/designated hitter making an outstanding contribution to our cause.
And with more coins in your pocket than Caden, Xaivian, the Secretary of Defense; and perhaps even sparman - a man with obviously enough money any time on his hands to follow stray Princeton shooters in a multitude of sports - you'll have to then take out for a post game meal at any nearby Dominican restaurant of your choosing... How about that?

While it's always an honor to be followed by Valmas and (as I have said before) instructive to read his stories about old New Yawk, my time spent following Tiger sports surely pales to the indefatigable Bengal and Joisey, which by Valmas' standard must mean they are in position to endow multiple university chairs (athletic and otherwise), for which I salute them.

Make the handy three-ring sign and ask the man for Ballantine.

How did Yale manage to lose twice to Harvard despite Yale having one of the best pitchers in the entire Unite States on its staff? Thanks to Harvard upsetting Yale twice, Columbia never had to play Yale in the Ivy League Tournament. According to the game announcer, Brett told him that he felt that Columbia was the best team in the Tournament. However, Lion fans need to thank the Crimson for making it easier.

the issue for Columbia was going to be whether the pitching would hold up; Sheets was good but not as dominant as he had been in the prior Penn game; Santana was dominant; and Edwards was great for 4 innings but started to run out of gas by the 5th, which is a pattern with him. I had thought that Yale would be the toughest draw because of its pitching and wa frankly stunned that it lost two games to Harvard. But as I said before the tournament, never bet against a Brett Boretti coached team—two extra inning wins and then a blowout.
