The NCAA Baseball Selection Show is on ESPN2 now and it has just been announced that our Ivy League Championship Team will play the 16th ranked nationally Southern Miss in the first round of the Hattiesburg Regional. Southern Miss is the host team for the Hattiesburg Regional which also includes the University of Alabama and the University of Miami.

So far, the Lions have allowed only three hits -
none in two and two-thirds of relief provided by Greek God, Floridian soph, Alex Sotiropoulos!

Sotiropoulos gave up just a bloop single in the seventh; giving way after 3 2/3 to Tomas Perez, Redondo Beach, CA, lefty soph, who gave up but an unearned run in the eighth. Meanwhile, the Lions added to their run total via two home run balls: one courtesy of Pittsfield, Mass., senior rightfielder, Anton Lazits, appropriately enough to rightfield; and a massive two-run homer to centerfield, off the bat of soph catcher, Owen Westbrook, of Santa Barbara, CA.

Columbia added two more runs in the top of the ninth and Lopez (NOT Perez) got the last three outs of the game, fairly efficiently. Final score, Columbia, 11 - Southern Mississippi, 4. The Lions move on to play Alabama or Miami, and this is getting more and more interesting.

Columbia soundly beat a ranked Southern Miss team on their home field with a big home crowd.

Many thanks to Valmas for the details on the Lion players.

Miami next at 9pm EST Saturday (tonight)

Columbia's soph catcher from Santa Barbara is Owen Estabrook; NOT Westbrook as I misstated, last night. Now that I'm, for the moment, in Mountain Lion's good graces, I've got to work hard to stay there - considering the way that guy sours on people at the drop of a hat. One minute, you're the GREAT Jim Engles (practically a CU tenured-track Professor, and the LATE (figuratively speaking, of course) Jim Engles, the next!

SM had a huge home crowd, to be expected, but college baseball is very popular in the south. In any event, very impressive win in which the humidity seemed to have an impact. Brett went to the bullpen at the first sign that Edwards might have started to tire out in the bottom on the 4th. Interesting choice in going with Edwards and holding back Santana and Sheets.

Two more Miami homers have the Hurricanes up by a dozen. Columbia's been held down by Miami junior starter and Florida native, Griffin Hugus. He's thrown 113 pitches through eight innings; walked only one Columbia batter and permitted just three extra base hits. With the Lions down to their final three outs, it'll be interesting to see if the Miami coaches allow Hugus to attempt a complete game performance.
