Subject: HEY, HATERS.....THINK A LITTLE TOO MUCH OF YOURSELVES???? LMAO!

In the current SOD, Mr. Chris Goutman - Executive Producer of As the World Turns - gave a lengthy interview about the show, and this particular part has the haters seeing red:

Digest: What effect does a fan campaign or letters have on how you tell a story?

Goutman: "I think the number of fans who write letters and who are online are a very, very, very, very---may I repeat, very---small percentage of the actual fan base. What I go on more than anything else is instinct and what I see on the air. I would hope that my instincts match our constituency. And I think, by and large, it has."

Digest: Do you ever look at message boards?

Goutman: "I never go online."

Digest: Do you get a mail report about what people are saying?

Goutman: "Vaguely, but I really don't look at it."

Digest: So would you recommend that people not bother sending things?

Goutman: "Yes, I do."

Digest: It's not going to make a difference?

Goutman: "Not to me."

(NOTE: There is much more, but we are going to address THIS part here, because THIS is the part that knocks the haters in the head, and has them - as usual - making @sses of themselves....GRIN)

If you look around the net tonight, you will notice that the haters of the show - those always complaining, always hating characters, always hating storylines - are the ones who are vehemently upset about this section of Goutman's interview. Why? Because they still manage to convince themselves and their cohorts that THEY represent the majority of soap viewers.....regardless of how many years many people have pointed out to them that THEY ARE NOT a majority!

Here are the world-wide statistics to back us (and Mr. Goutman) up:

According to all of the internet data, there are approximately 6,674,280,432 (going up all the time) people in the world, of which approximately 1,379,679,425 people are online. That translates to roughly about 20% of the world's population being online. The graphic below shows that 17.5% of that percentage - meaning ONLY 17.5% of the 100% of that 20% of the world's population is all the whole of North America has online:

So, not only is the whole of North America NOT a majority of people online - think of how slim the percentage of North Americans online who are soap opera fans is! Almost all of the soap fans I know are NOT online, and if they are, they would never venture to visit the soap message boards.

The very wise Mr. Goutman - and countless other soap execs before him who also knew that facts - has a valid point. In fact, a person who had no idea about the state of the show, and who might venture online would immediately think the show is universally hated and could tank out at any minute! The actual truth is that ATWT holds its own very well against the line up of the 9 soaps that are currently on the air. So they ARE doing it right!

In the midst of all the fuss about Goutman stating the facts - I saw where one of the mods at the hate-filled SOC board (who is also generally a hater of the show and many of its characters and actors) said that board represented a daily poll of what folks felt about the show....(hold on while I giggle-giggle)....WHAT A CROCK!!!!

The internet is a place where people who are like-minded can group together and bitch - or praise - about the show to each other. The audiences of soap opera however, are very diverse. NOT like-minded. The show has to try day in and day out to please everyone, and they prefer to please those who ARE fans of the show, fans of the characters and fans of the actors, and those who LOVE the show as a whole entity. They cannot cater to those who only like one or two characters - They cannot cater to those who only like one or two storylines....And tell me WHY the show should care what the haters think? Or what the haters want?

Online soap fans have a tendency to believe that THEY could do it better. They DO NOT begin to have a clue. Many of them tend to believe they are writers, and that they could do better. GAG! Soaps have to write story 365 days a year - for several fictional families with many characters in several stories - and in ATWT's case - for over 51 years! All the while trying to give a very diverse and changing audience something that entertains them and draws them in day after day. I'd like to see any online self-proclaimed 'writer' keep up with that kind of story-telling. Oh, and there are those who think they could produce better than those who have been in the industry for decades, too. Riiii-iiight. As I have stated before on this board - If these idiots had their way with the genre it would have died decades ago!

And let's get real here - Mr. Goutman is NOT saying to stop sending in your SUPPORT of the show, your favorite actors, or your opinions about storylines. But for goodness sake!!! DO NOT try and tell him, or CBS, or PGP how to run their show, or tell their stories - You have NO CLUE about the whole process, and that DISQUALIFIES you (and your distasteful boards) - for the job! Not to mention how your rude and nasty hatred, and your total lack of understanding most things soap opera is all about, MORE than disqualifies you - not only for the job, but it also negates you getting anything you want on the air - buy a clue. Please.

And as we have proven above, you are also DISQUALIFIED as any type of 'majority.' Your hate-filled boards are NOT a 'daily poll' of what the audience as a whole is thinking. Get a grip. And could we PLEASE get the cry of 'I.Have.No.Words.' to really, REALLY be true?????
