Subject: Melodramatic comedy format in the first season

I've been watching the first season and has anybody else noticed a melodramatic theme underlying the comedy format? It seems like so many episodes that season dealt with some kind of serious issue, like familial alienation in "Other People's Houses" (I couldn't believe David White mentions how he intentionally stayed away from his own family!). It seems like the writers were trying to find their own style and didn't really get consistent until the second season. But it seems like this whole melodrama/comedy format resurfaced toward the end of the series, with Robbie thinking about leaving Katie to go off with Sal Mineo or Katie thinking of leaving him. Or the whole Polly fiasco. Does anybody have any thoughts about whether the writers were trying to do something specific with the melodramatic comedy format?
