You definitely want it to be sturdy. The oar shaft makes a huge long lever arm. Also, there is a fair amount of scraping and banging that you'd want to protect your boat from. I'm an amateur sculler, but I also find it's pretty common for the oar to jump out of the notch even with a lanyard holding things in place.

What does the transom look like?

I know on my Santana there is a pre-existing notch to mount on outboard that seems like it could be turned into an our-mount.

Macha is double-ended, so there is a strong beam that projects out the side, with a notch for the sculling oar.

The advantage to having it off center is it's nice to have it out of the way of the tiller and mainsheet. I find it's pretty common in marginal conditions to be sculling while still hoping to sail... :-)
