The problem with the petro-based economy, is simple: it works very well in most ways. For example:

1. I have a customer base which is the entire Earth, because I can sell and SHIP rapidly using petro-fueled transportation systems.

2. I can build using materials and finished products form all over the Earth, for the same reason.

3. My tea I just had, came from many Asian countries, to French via Russia (Russian Anastasia tea), the kettle from Taiwan and the raw materials used in the manufacture from almost anywhere on Earth.

4. The stove on my boat: Canada. My snazzy solar powered navigator's watch: Japan, computer to type this - who knows ,but all this global economy and cooperation for business came from rapid transportation and the necessity of rapid communications that it spawned.

So - oil itself is not evil - far from it. The USE of oil, water, 'national security', money or anything to enslave human beings who did nothing wrong to 'them' is evil. Personally, I really don't care when people say 'the USA uses more energy than anyone else' (true or not, I'll leave to you). I notice that the major polluters on Earth per capita are often the least productive countries, like Mexico, Indonesia etc. Ever seen the 'middens' behind south Asian cities? The People's Republic of China - like most outright communist nations, rapes the land, then solves the ecological problems by jailing dissidents. No dissidents = no problem. It's an old recipe.

Do I think that we would have a better world without the internal combustion engine? In some ways. My nation would not be over run with aliens without our having invented easy transportation. On the other hand, I have lived and worked on four continents because of easy - petrobased - transportation.

I think that it's boils down to human nature: evil people WILL use anything they can to promote their evil, whether politicians or the third world life-forms for whom 'we' installed internet cafe's to help them join 'the global village'. The next thing we know, places like Nigeria are hubs of cyber-crime, using the 'gift' of world access as a new venue to steal. It's not the PC or the internet - it's criminality in humans.

(This sermon is available on DVD for a cup of 82 octane gasoline...) har har

Back to work. I have criminals in Washington to pay......
