Subject: sailing newbie, advice on oars

I just got my dayskipper in the UK and bought an old (very) catalina 22 from my instructor. She's got a 2.5HP outboard which I'm told should be upgraded to a 4-6 but I've been thinking I'd like to ditch the engine altogether. Already thought about oars before finding out that other people are already doing this. I'm not an experienced sailor but I want to SAIL. Chances are if I go out with an engine I'm going to keep using it and get into all those motor "assisted" habits. Already on my dayskipper course we hardly put the sails up and the instructor got freaked by a yachtmans gale (this is within sight of shore). I got my certificate (in a nice little book too). But I still don't feel I've really learnt to sail.

So if I want to fit oars to my cat whereabouts should I install them? back in the cockpit somewhere? and can I use the same ones for rowing and sculling.

Would love to learn some proper sailing techniques. Do you know anyone in the UK who does this stuff. Or maybe I need to save my pennies and get stateside somehow....
