My philosophy is that you should know about and use all available forms of practical navigation. "Practical" really is the key word. I have a hand-held GPS because it costs only $100 from REI. I don't have radar because it's fucking expensive and probably draws a lot of juice.

But for sure, get a cockpit compass, get a hand bearing compass, get a sextant, get a good watch, a barometer, all the charts you can get your hands on, etc. Know how to use it all. So then when your GPS runs out of batteries or the Zombie Apocalypse renders it useless, you'll be all set.
