Subject: Philosophy, GPS and the sailor

I'd like to know how people feel about GPS. Personally I'm drawn to it out of fear - just the same as with engines - fear of my own lack of knowledge, fear of being in trouble somewhere and not being found, fear of getting lost. Fear, fear, fear. Not to mention that the system we all use relies on the co-operation of US Airforce managed satellites. I know most of you are American but I personally don't like the idea of relying on a single nation's system that can track me down anywhere on the planet.

Has anyone done much celestial navigation? What did people do before GPS, or when entering "unchartered waters"....now doesn't that sound exciting and adventurous?
