My immediate plans are outline here ( http://www.voy.com/153904/4232.html ), and are somewhat based on my guess as to what life in a post-Peak Oil era will be like. We retired early because life seemed too short to bet on a traditional retirement/dream home scenario. My parents did that, and I didn't like the way it worked out for them. Will we have enough way down the road? Who knows, we all place our bets and takes our chances.

I do think keeping a boat near by to live on if need be is a good backup plan, no matter where you are. We plan to liveaboard here in the US for a while, then when we get to Thailand, we plan to get another boat just in case. I think living aboard has so many advantages .... cheap, healthy, mobile, fun, and safe.

We picked Thailand because we had Thai friends that made the choice too hard to turn down. Actually, the Big Island (Puna district where Jay is) had been our destination before the Thailand opportunity came along. They are similar in many ways .... tropical climate, year-round growning season, good access to the ocean/sailing, healthy environment, etc. Of course, the weather in Hawaii is superior, but the cost of living in Thailand is less.

So, my plan has been to get out of the US (at least the mainland) and get into a tropical environment where I can grow some food, spend lots of time outside which is so much more healthy, and basically live a simpler life. And if I need to move on, well that's what the boat is for.
