Thanks for taking the time to lay that all out Bill. I have a maximum of $10,000 for this project, unless I want to get myself into debt.

As far as engine use goes, I only want to have it for getting in and out of Marina del Rey until I get some feel for the winds there. There are a lot of high-rises right on the water and I have noticed the wind appears to do crazy things as I have walked around looking for non-catalinas. Most my (rusty) previous experience has been dingy sailing, so I am not that worried, but I do need to get time to practice maneuvering under sail in a bigger boat before I go engineless - If only to avoid insurance claims from those lovely big boats that never seem to go anywhere....

I looked up the SA/D for various boats early on and saw that the Renegade was only a little over the Islander (16.08 to 15.99) and the Triton was higher than both (16.76) Everything I have seen coming in above the Triton's figure (other than the Dolphin...) has been a cored-hull racer.

I had been basing sail area during my search on a Pardey quote that 83sq feet sail to 2000lb displacement was the minimum acceptable for light air performance, and I prefer a full/cutaway keel to a fin for reasons of solidity.

Both the Triton and the Islander have a large sail collection. The Triton has a fully battened main. Both have working, storm, 130+ and drifter headsails.

I wasn't that worried about the interior of the Triton - I figured that I could daysail and camp the occasional weekend then spend the time over the "winter" (I live in LA...) adapting the interior and removing the engine.

I like the Bluenose but they are out of my price range and my wife requires a cabin (I tried to convince her that we could camp under an awning but she was mightily unimpressed)

I totally agree about the engine hours in ads. Unfortunately in my limited experience the sailing characteristics you mention seem to be beyond the ken of non-racers. The iron breeze points anywhere you please...

Thanks again for taking the time to lay this out!

Cheers
Neil
