Hello Heather,
I tried to contact you on Genesunited but don't know what happened to my message. I am looking for details re my grandfather, WILLIAM HENRY ALLEN/ALLAN aka HENRY ALLEN/ALLAN. His children's BC's state that he was born sometime in 1840's, in Armidale, NSW (his age fluctuates between each BC).
The first hard evidence I have of him is in 1883 when his 1st child was born in Gympie area, Qld. His partner/defacto was Ellen Josephine formerly Disher nee Cooper, who states that she was born in SA in 1845. However she was baptised in Wicklow Ireland in 1845 and arrive in SA in 1850 on the Lysander with her parents and Siblings. They moved to Tothill Creek and Ellen later married John Disher and together they ran the "Royal Oak" Hotel at Tothill Creek, unti l873 when John went to NT to open hotels, I think along the Overland Telegraph. Their only daughter Jessie born 1872, died 1878 In Vict. at Grandfather Disher's Property.
I do not know where Ellen met Henry. I have no details of his religion, parents,nationality etc. Henry's occupation was given as teamster/carter. The children left Monkland School Gympie in 1895/6 and from there I don't know where the family went. I have found that Ellen was back in SA, living in Port Augusta (she had family contacts there) in 1899 when their 1st daughter was married in Port Pirie. Ellen was a witness and Henry was listed as Father with no further detail. He was definitley deceased by 1903, when his 2nd daughter was married in Broken Hill. Because of his age at time of birth of 1st daughter, I wonder if he might have been married previously.
I have found that Ellen was running hotels/boarding houses in Carrington and Wakefield Sts in Adelaide from 1908-1912 and that she died 1915 in Adelaide Hospital and was buried WTC. I have tried to find Henry's death in Qld and SA but each time I find a likely prospect and try to investigate I hit a brick wall. Official searches for BC(NSW), MC(SA) and DC(SA,QLD,NSW) for Henry have resulted in NO RECORD RESULT, probably because I can't supply enough detail.
Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
