I'm looking to contact the living descendants of Alexander Crawford who emmigrated to Moona Plains, NSW about 1840, with wife Elizabeth Hill and 8 children. I've learned they had the Kunderang lands @ Walcha...Maybe still own the West part?? I found some BMD dates at your records off & at Australia cemeteries found the Walcha cemetery has some of them. There are about 100 Crawfords in your Kunderang list I looked at for the online phone book, who would I begin with?? I found 2 in Walcha now and am ready to mail letters today asking if?
Google books online, 'The Origin & Stem of the Irish Nation', by O'Hart, page 141. Crawford - the bottom of the page that shows ....2. Edward Evans -- he was my GGgrandfather. If someone knows about the above or has any idea where I could write now, that would be great. Am hugely enjoying looking around Australia for information. Working to learn how Australia is setup so I know how to look for things.
Bye for now from Santa Rosa, California Katie

I have been researching my family and would like to add information, photos etc about ---
my father's side
James Allen m Maria Welsh after arriving in South Austalia from England aboard the Trafalgar. They had at least 3 children - George, James (my ancestor) and Rose. James snr died and Maria married Enoch Jackaway. James jnr married Sarah Ann Heaver (dau George Heaver and Mary Ann Runjeet Mills) and had 10 children - Ernest, Arthur, Howard, Edgar, Alice, Edith, Allen, Gilbert, Bert and John. Sarah and John died in childbirth and James later married Minnie Louisa Clee (dau George Thomas Clee and Mary Ann Kerrison {dau William and Frances})Mary Ann was a widow with children when she married George, who was also a widower. His wife, Martha, and he came to Australia from Birmingham, on the Carpentaria with a daughter, Martha. They had 10 children in Victoria before she died and he remarried. A lot of the Allen children from the first family settled around Mt Gambier and into Victoria. James jnr and his second family, as well as Gil and Howe, travelled overland from Kaniva to Nhill then through NSW to the area around Quirindi where they worked and then to Wallangarra where they took a train to Chinchilla and settled some 20-30 miles in an area known as Pelican. There were 8 children in th second family. The eldest daughter of the second family, Ethel, married Robert Young son of Sam and Agnes who came to Qld aboard the Omrah from Gateshead, England. They had 2 sons of whom my father is one.
My mother's family-
Her grandfather, David Oliphant,(son of James, John, Robert, Robert)came to Australia from Montrose and Brechin, with his brother, James. They settled in the Boonah area of Qld. He married Mary Anne Wright (dau Allen Wright and Eliza Clark)and they had 7 children. David's cousin, Arthur Morris Oliphant settled in Cottesloe, W A. James left Boonah and we have little info on him. We have a photo of his son James in Brisbane. One son, David, known as Alex, married Ruth Craig. Ruth was ninth of 17 children to John Craig (son Hugh and Janet nee Hyslop) and Mary Dunckel(dau Henry and Wilhemina nee Bergamen). John Craig stowed aboard ship and when found worked as a crew member and after sailing the world left the ship in Tasmania. Wilhelmina travelled from Poland to Tasmania with her parents and a sister. Ruth and Alex had 4 children of whom my mother is one.

- FLINDERS RANGES – Cowin, Hall, Garrett, Prior & Niblock -- Ross Thomas, 09:04:06 11/27/05 Sun (cbr-pow-pr2.tpgi.com.au/203.26.16.67)
Thomas Cowin and sons Arthur and Charlie; Richard, Thomas and William Hall; John and William Garrett; Edward Prior; William Niblock.
These ancestors of mine moved from Kapunda, Laura and other districts of South Australia to take up land when Kanyaka Station on the Willochra Plain, Flinders Ranges was subdivided for closer settlement in the 1870s. When drought hit in the 1890s, many of these folk moved west to the Eastern Goldfields of WA. Some moved again in the early 1900s to pioneer farming in regions south-east of Perth.
The Cowins and Garretts were related and originated in Lonan, Isle of Man. The Halls were from Stockport, Cheshire and possibly Leek, then Lancashire. Niblocks possibly originated on the Yorke Peninsula and Priors the Kapunda region.
Can anyone help with information on these good people? I especially need help on the disasterous Willochra experience - some were landholders at Gordon and Simmonston – some are thought to have been teamsters – some droving on the Birdsville Track.
Cheers, Ross

Dear Kim Ingram,
Further to my previous message I realised I made a typing error. My Gt Gt aunt's name should read Frances Ann Carpenter..not Franes! Her husband James Burfitt came from Somerset, UK and as stated they settled in Bathurst NSW. Frances Ann had a sister Mary Carpenter, who married a Robert Rebby, and went to Sydney NSW I guess at about the same time ie 1833. Mary is also mentioned in James Ingram's will of 1845, and as living in Sydney. In spite of lots of looking, so far no trace of her has been able to be found.

- JOSEPH WHITFIELD -- Pauline Thomas, 19:44:01 01/28/06 Sat (user-6849.lns6-c11.dsl.pol.co.uk/84.69.122.193)
Joseph Whitfield was born 1848 in Workington, Cumberland, England to John and Mary Whitfield (nee Beeby).
Around 1875 (after the birth of his third son) in Hartlepool, Durham he deserted his wife and family.
It is likely that he travelled to Australia to join his brother William who was a Mariner in the Brisbane area around this time - altho' his travels took him around Australia, William eventually married in Mittagong in 1879.
Joseph's deserted wife in England eventually remarried as a Widow in 1886, legally she could have assumed Widowship after over 7 years of desertion or did she hear of Joseph's death by another means ?
Joseph was a Slater by trade.
After years of searching for my great Grandfather Joseph Whitfield I have drawn complete blanks and I would be so grateful for any help, however small.
Regards, Pauline Thomas (nee Whitfield)

- Olaf Victor BLADIN alias George GILBERT -- Narelle, 21:38:29 01/08/06 Sun (203-59-151-242.dyn.iinet.net.au/203.59.151.242)
Olaf Victor Bladin was born in 1831. in Stockholm Sweden. He is my GGgrandfather who lead a very interesting life. He travelled from Stockholm to England around 1849. He was crew on the convict ship "Oriental Queen" which sailed from Plymouth to Hobart Town and then arrived in Sydney in March 1853.
Olaf jumped ship on arrival and took off with many other crew to the NSW or Vic goldfields. He married Frances Matlida SHORE in 1857 in Victoria and they had 7 children. Olaf was a clever man( built the first police station in Traralgon) but he spent many years on the run from the police for deserting his wife and children. Four of his youngest children went to industrial schools because their mother could not keep them.
He also had a son Robert Victor Stone BLADIN in South Australia in 1877 who I have never been able to trace. It seems that Robert dropped the surname BLADIN in favour of his mother's surname STONE.
I believe that Olaf died some time between 1892 and 1912 when his wife Frances died. On her death certificate in faint writing it seems to suggest that Olaf was deceased.
The last time he was seen by family he said he was heading for Sydney. He was never seen again as far as I know. Someone had to know of his wheareabouts to have the late entry of his death placed on Frances death certificate. I would like to find when Olaf died and where he is buried.
I would love to her from anyone who can shed light on his dissappearance, death or burial location.

- HALL Family - Lyndoch Valley, Gawler and Kapunda SA -- Ross Thomas, 08:37:01 11/27/05 Sun (cbr-pow-pr2.tpgi.com.au/203.26.16.67)
I am descended from Daniel Hall (born c1812) who emigrated from Stockport, Cheshire to South Australia in 1839 on the barque 'Delhi'. He worked as a farmer, surveyor, gold seeker and teamster until his death in 1875 at Mern Merna, northern South Australia. He was also accompanied by his brother Hugh and their families.
His descendants pioneered farming at Gordon in the Flinders Ranges before drought drove them to gold prospecting and sandalwood gathering in the Eastern Goldfields of WA. They later pioneered farming at Tarwonga in WA.
It seems that a third brother or cousin Richard from Leek, Lancashire (now Staffordshire) followed Daniel and Hugh to SA in 1853. Richard (1815-1887) was a cordwainer and was accompanied to Australia by his wife Ellenor (born c1820) and children Richard (b 31.3.1848), Jane (b 6.6.1850) and James Henry Hall (b 1852).
The three Halls jointly or individually owned property in Lyndoch Valley, Gawler and Kapunda, SA.
I have extensive information on Daniel and Richard Hall separately but do not know how they are related. I have very little information on Hugh Hall and his descendants.
Any help on these matters would be much appreciated.
Ross

Matthew Blackwell (1812-77) married Ann Rogers at Crowan, Cornwall on 27 September 1834 and emigrated to South Australia in 1847. Matthew’s parents were Thomas Blackwell (1764-?) and Elizabeth Rodda of Crowan.
Matthew Blackwell, his wife Ann and their 5 children Ann (b.Crowan 1835), Matthew (b.Camborne 1841), Elizabeth Jane (b.Camborne 1836), Mary (b.Camborne 1839) and Isabella (b.County Wicklow, Ireland 1846, arrived on the 'Rachel' in Adelaide in 1847 and by 1865 he had set up a blacksmith's business in Kapunda, South Australia. A Blackwell Street in Kapunda is named after Matthew.

I am trying to trace the SCANLON side of my family, not much to go on I'm afraid...
James SCANLON b. circa 1859 in Stafforshire England. Married Irena May BROWN (b. circa 1873 AT SEA), 2nd November, 1894 at Bairnsdale.( No certificate).
Children of their union were:
1)Frederick James SCANLON b. circa 1894 in Vic (don't know where, haven't found certificate)
2)Martha Ann SCANLON b. July 1896 at Narracan, Narracanshire, County of Buln in Victoria. d 1946 in NSW under name of Norma Lewis or Levy
3) Herbert Scanlon b 1897 in the District of Panmure, at Cudgee, Warrnambool Shire, Heytesbury County.
Herbert died in Fitzroy 1935 buried 1936 at Fawkner. He was killed after a brawl outside the hotel.
I believe the mother died in 1950 in Parkway Assylum at Beechworth VIC. (at the time her name was May Irene Dyble)
I haven't been able to find one single SCANLON that would fit in to my tree thus far. I hope someone out there knows something!

I am looking for deaths in South Australia or Victoria for William and Ann Flack. They landed in Port Adelaide in 1854 and then seem to have disappeared. Children were Eliza (Chapman), Sarah (Robinson), Jane (Chapman), Esther (Lewis), George, Harriet, Rosena (Moncrieff) and Elizabeth. After 14 years in S.A. Rosena, my g. grandmother went to Victoria, and so did some of the other children, but I just don't seem to be able to stumble upon any records of William and Ann. They were both born in Suffolk, England; married in Cambridgshire in 1829, and left Oakington to come to Australia. Hope some kind soul can lend me a bit of a hand! Thanks, Margie Brown, QLD.

- SEARCHING FOR - MARY KELLY -- PATRICIA SUMNER, 15:30:03 03/08/03 Sat (ESS-p-144-138-85-227.mega.tmns.net.au/144.138.85.227)
Mary Kelly was my father's birth mother. He was registered as Maurice John, born 30.1.1913 at Royal Women's Hospital, Paddington NSW. She declared she was 24 years old, born in Binalong, no father shown. He was adopted (no records exist for this time) by Louisa Ann (nee Myers, born Molong) and Archibald Joseph Kennedy, 45 Francis Street, East Sydney. He was baptised at St Mary's Cathedral on 1 December 1913 with mother shown as Mary Ellen Kelly. Perhaps he was taken in by the Kennedys about this time. Archibald Kennedy was great grandson of Donald Kennedy & Ann Grant who arrived Sydney on Royal Admiral in 1792. They were pioneer settlers in the Hawkesbury.
