Hey Wayne, Good to see your still kicking!

>Reading between the lines I can see that you don't
>support the antler restrictions.

*** You don't have to read between the lines to pick up on that...Just read a few of the other posts. ***

You for one should
>know that more than half the hunters support antler
>restriction. Like me they just didn't like the options
>that were offered by the FWC.
>
*** That was not the case when we were fighting the blanket horn rulings in Tallahassee. I am going by the data they presented...Which was less than half of the people surveyed wanted changes made...and better than half wanted Status Quo. ***

>I do agree with you that the FWC will keep adding
>WMA's to the list. This is because they are getting
>pressure from hunters and the only way they are going
>to keep the hunters they have know and hopefully
>attract more hunters in the future is to have better
>hunting on WMA's.

*** Similar to Mark's comment...I never see those hunters at the meetings and the FWC never presents these requests they are being pressured by to anyone. It's kinda like an Abominal Snowman...You hear about em, but you don't see em.***
>
>The only thing that we can hope is that this is just
>the first step. Hopefully reduced bag limits on bucks
>and more doe harvest will follow.

*** Several points here...
1. Beware what you ask for.. If you don't want to shoot 5" spikes, don't. Plain and simple. If all the people that want antler restrictions would just not shoot spikes or forkhorns they'd get what they asked for. You will see less shootable bucks for the first year or two. Then when you see shootable bucks the total number of havested bucks will be less from then on.
2. If your wanting trophy deer...Get a lease. The FWC is not willing/able to do anything more to create trophy deer other than implement antler restrictions. No food plots...no feeders...no does unless the particular WMA happens to be overpopulated with deer. Which they tell me is not likely. They also told me that bucks have simply been over harvested in Florida.
3. No one in the FWC can tell you how many deer we have anywhere in this state. They can't tell you what these antler restrictions are going to mean to the herd. Will it result in High Grading where the very best genetic gets killed off and all you have left is the standard run-of-the-mill ho-hum 1.5 year old spike, 2.5 year old 4pt, 3.5 year old 6pt etc.... that is if its typical...maybe they be 2.5 year old 3pts and 3.5 year old 5pts...I, they and you don't know.
4. Whe the AR's were put in place on the few "TEST" areas there was to be data provided to the public before going further. Well that didn't happen and they kept adding one or two until now 5% of the WMA's have either fork horn or 3pts on one side or better. When we asked them for the data from the first..Well it was only a couple years worth and it was tainted by the fact that a couple had been fork horn moving to 3pts or better and a couple were user pay with no check station to gather data at....Results are...very little useful information to tell the public what the 3pts or one side or better is doing for hunters or the herd.
5. Reduced bag limits...Ok how about One deer a day instead of two..There we just cut the take by 50%. According to the FWC...The percentage of hunters in Florida that take more than 1 deer per season is 2%-3%. That means of 3000-4500 of us get at least two a year and I would bet the percentages drop tremendously from there. This includes both public and private lands. You want to talk about losing hunters to other states...Setting a bag limit below 3 or 4 per season and no does and like Mark says, you might as well get out your Camera and Binoculars...Cause your now a Wildlife Viewer.
