Are you listening?

We write a thousand pages
they're torn and on the floor.
Headlights hammer the windows,
were locked behind these doors.
And we are never leaving
this place is part of us.
And all these scenes repeating
are cold to the touch.

The thought of spending Christmas night alone in her apartment was worse than the fact that she had spent all of Christmas day working at the restaurant. Truthfully Christmas had always been a let down. It was always more promises broken. Every year her father would say over the phone, ‘Next year Honey, next year I’ll be home for Christmas. I promise.’ And every year Echo would believe him, and hope for that Christmas she’d be able to spend with her father. It never happened though. This year was no exception, except this year it was Echo that wasn’t coming home. And this year Echo wasn’t home to pick up the phone and listen to her father’s annual lie.

She had moved here to get a new start. She wanted to live her life on her own. She had decided that if she didn’t help herself, no one else was going to do it either. She didn’t want this Christmas to be like every other year: a disappointment. So, she decided to do something about it. As soon as Echo had finished her shift at the restaurant she rushed home and dug through an array of boxes until she found her white ice skates. The skates were draped over her shoulder by their lengthy white laces as she made the short walk to the dimly lit lodge. Echo guessed there would be very few occupants, but she didn’t even head inside to check it out.

It was night time by now, but the sun even though the sun had ceased to provide light, a full moon had risen and lighted the snow covered landscape beautifully. It didn’t take long for Echo to locate the small ice covered pond, she had noticed a few people skating on it a couple days earlier. She walked over the crunchy snow to a lone bench that lined the pond and sat down to lace up her skates. Finally, once she was situated, the warmly dressed girl carefully stepped out onto the ice and took a few slow rounds of the pond.
