Andy and Adrea - I was poking around on the web and came across your messages. The way I stumbled on this content is because I was searching for content on my Grandfather whom you both mention in your discussion......Mr Pepitone. He was a great (and tough as nails) man with a heart of gold. You are both (I beleive) a little younger than me but I am sure we were at the pool at the same time. I was a Mat Boy from '78 - '83. One of my favorite memories of my Grandfather was when he would annouce over the loud speaker......especially "Rosa from the concession stand.....phone call".....how many phone calls did that lady get in a single day ;o) He was an iconic figure and I am blessed to have had him as my Grandfather. He passed away in '92 after moving to Florida for the final years of his life......he is missed still to this day and cherish his memory. I have great memories of the pool club and also the neighborhood around Flatbush Terrace.....I was only there during the summers but they almost seem magical now......going on the roof of Bldg 1 to hang out, spending time with friends on 51st, picking out something from the convenience store across from the pool (and picking up smokes for my Grandfather), working as Mat Boy, rapid fire off the high dive, and July 4th bottle rocket wars with the kids from the other side of 51st/Ave I. I went back about 3 years ago and the place is very different. I went on a Sunday morning (on the way out of Long Is) and took my kids. THe place looked like a battle zone since almost everything was closed (with their gates pulled down) and my kids were shocked to see the streets in which I spent all of my childhood summers. It is a shame that things change for what appears to be the worst but I realized several years ago that its the memories of great days gone by and great people no longer in our lives that make us appreciate what we have today. Life is a gift (or blessing) and we should always focus on building great memories for ourselves and those around us......for its those memories that makes up who we are today and help shape what tomorrow has in store. Anyway - just wanted to thank you both for sharing your quick comment about my Grandfather and Im happy to hear that he is one of your more notable childhood memories.......he is mine as well!
