Subject: Need a little help. I am using VPN to access a network some where else. My laptop does great but my desk top connects but then I can't get to the desk top I need. The olny difference is My desktop has a new version of Norton sym and my laptop doesn't. I have turned off every firewall I can find but it still doesn't work. Can some one help me before I go crazy?

[> What operating system are you using on your desktop? I just asked DH (who is a bigger computer nerd than me! LOL) and he said he doesn't think Windows XP Home can access VPNs. The professional versions of XP and Vista can, but he doesn't think Home can. Just a suggestion. -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 15:43:21 03/01/07 Thu [1]

[> [> Thanks for helping but they are both XP Home edition. The lap top has an earlier release but other than that the same. The wierd thing is they are both HP Pavilions and on the same network at my house but the desk top connects to thr router direct and the lap top connects wireless. I'm half way thinking of removing Norton Symantic and get a different anti-virus/security program. Any other suggestions? I'll try everything. -- CAZ, 16:08:19 03/01/07 Thu [1]

[> [> [> I have absolutely no idea about any of this- but I do know I was having trouble with my computer at work shutting off my quickbooks or browser all the time and running as slow as molasses- my tech guy removed my nortons and the problem is gone. I also use AVG free for antivirus- Hope recommended it and it seems to work fairly well on all my computers. As long as you don't hit the mass sites like my space or online gambling (lol) that attach a lot of crap- it does pretty well. -- chris k, 05:15:48 03/02/07 Fri [1]

[> [> [> [> Everything points to Norton blocking the access. I spoke with Norton techs to help me but they wanted to charge me to make their product allow me to do my job. By that time my frustration level was over the top and I suggested the pay me to remove their 'garbage' from my computer. The conversation went down hill from there. I'll look into AVG. Sounds like removing Norton is it and I'll need something to replace it. Thanks -- CAZ, 06:42:37 03/02/07 Fri [1]

[> When you say VPN, are you using PC Anywhere or an actual VPN client provided to you by your company. If it's a VPN client then you should have no problems with firewall issues. If it's PC Anywhere, then you need to configure both your laptop and the desktop that you are going to view. Look at your literature for the port numbers to open. DON'T remove your firewall or antivirus. -- Erin, 17:14:19 03/03/07 Sat [1]

[> [> I'm using a true VPN. With my lap top I can get to exactly where I need to be. With my desk top I can access the network but once there I can not get to the 'desk top' or any where else. I've pinged and it just times out. both PCs are going thru the same router, one wireless. The only difference between the two is the ewer version of Norton. What do you think? -- CAZ, 08:11:56 03/04/07 Sun [1]

[> [> [> Is this VPN provided by your job? If so they should have some tips on how to configure your Firewall to allow for outgoing traffic. They should be able to give you port numbers so that you can create a rule that allows for your firewall to let that traffic out. The reason why I asked if it was a real VPN is that VPN normally takes care of those issues by creating a tunnel using web traffic. -- Erin, 09:34:56 03/04/07 Sun [1]

[> [> [> [> The VPN was provided by the job sight. Everyone seems to be concentrating on finding the differences between the lap top and the desk top. They originally thought it was the cable modem or Time Warner but when the lap top worked going through the same router and modem that theory died. They kind of gave up once the lap top worked. Would deleting and reloading VPN possibly help? I really want to use my desk top PC for most of this job, the keyboard is just better. -- CAZ, 11:20:30 03/04/07 Sun [1]

[> [> [> [> [> I took the liberty of looking up the port number of the standard VPN service. Go to your advance settings and allow TCP and UDP traffic for port 1723. That may help. -- Erin, 11:43:29 03/04/07 Sun [1]

[> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> [> Okay since this didn't work does this mean there is something else I should be looking at? I'm still willing to keep trying if you are. I don't want to take all your time since I can use my laptop and the client is suppose to work with me but with use of the laptop my problem is not a priority any more. -- CAZ, 12:13:54 03/05/07 Mon [1]
